2024–25 Úrvalsdeild Kvenna (basketball)
The 2024–25 Úrvalsdeild kvenna is the 68th season of the Úrvalsdeild kvenna, the top tier women's basketball league on Iceland. It starts in October 2024 with the first round of the regular season and ends in May 2025. Keflavík are the defending champions. Haukar won their fifth title after beating Njarðvík in the final. Competition format The league consists of 10 teams with a 8 team playoff tournament. The bottom team will be relegated to the 1. deild kvenna while the team in 9th place will face the teams in 2-4 place in the 1. deild in a playoff for a spot in the Úrvalsdeild. 2023–24 Úrvalsdeild Kvenna (basketball)
The 2023–24 Úrvalsdeild kvenna is the 67th season of the Úrvalsdeild kvenna, the top tier women's basketball league on Iceland. The season started on 27 September 2023 and concluded on 22 May 2024 with Keflavík winning the national championship after beating Njarðvík in the Úrvalsdeild finals, 3–0. Sara Rún Hinriksdóttir of Keflavík was named the Finals MVP. Competition format Prior to the season the number of teams in the league were increased from 8 to 10 with a 8 team playoff tournament. The bottom team will be relegated to the 1. deild kvenna while the team in 9th place will face the teams in 2-4 place in the 1. deild in a playoff for a spot in the Úrvalsdeild. Rules regarding foreign players were also changed, allowing free flow of players from within the European Economic Area. Brynjar Karl Sigurðsson
Brynjar Karl Sigurðsson (born 17 September 1973) is an Icelandic businessman, basketball coach and former player. He played several seasons in the Icelandic top-tier Úrvalsdeild karla and was a member of the Icelandic national team. Following his basketball career, he founded the company Sideline Sports which designed coaching software used by the Premier League, NBA and the NFL. A controversial figure in Iceland, he has been scrutinized for his coaching methods and fight with the Icelandic Basketball Association to let his junior women's team compete in boys tournaments. Stjarnan Women's Basketball
The Stjarnan women's basketball team, commonly known as Stjarnan, is the women's basketball department of Ungmennafélagið Stjarnan, based in the town of Garðabær, Iceland. History In 2009, disgruntled Ármann players, unhappy with poor training facilities and lack of practice time, contacted Stjarnan and inquired if the board would be interested in starting a women's team. The board responded positively and in the end the entire Ármann team transferred over. Stjarnan finished first in the second-tier 1. deild kvenna in 2015 and defeated Njarðvík in the playoffs to win promotion to the top-tier Úrvalsdeild kvenna for the first time in its history. Einar Árni Jóhannsson
Einar Árni Jóhannsson (born 8 January 1977) is an Icelandic basketball coach. He won the Icelandic men's championship in 1998 with Njarðvík as an assistant to Friðrik Ingi Rúnarsson, and in 2006 as Njarðvík's head coach. He won the Icelandic Men's Basketball Cup in 2005 with Njarðvík and was named the Úrvalsdeild karla Coach of the Year in 2007. Friðrik Ingi Rúnarsson
Friðrik Ingi Rúnarsson is an Icelandic basketball coach and former player. As a coach, he has won three Icelandic men's championships and has guided his team to the Icelandic national finals a record seven times. Friðrik was the general manager of the Icelandic Basketball Association from 2006 to 2014 and coached the Icelandic men's national basketball team from 1999 to 2003. Þorlákshöfn (, ) is a town on the southern coast of Iceland in the Municipality of Ölfus. The town is named after Saint Thorlak who was a bishop at Skálholt. Its main importance is as a port as it has the only harbour on Iceland's southern coastline between Grindavík in the west and Höfn in the east. Hveragerði (, "hot-spring yard") is a town and municipality in the south of Iceland, 45 km east of Reykjavík on Iceland's main ringroad, Route 1. The river Varmá runs through the town. The Hamar women's basketball team, commonly known as Hamar, is the women's basketball department of Íþróttafélagið Hamar, based in the town of Hveragerði, Iceland.
