2023–24 Wellington Phoenix FC Season
The 2023–24 season is the 17th in the history of Wellington Phoenix FC, Wellington Phoenix Football Club. In addition to the A-League Men, domestic league, the club is participating in the Australia Cup for the ninth time. Overview Pre-season On 14 April 2023, it was announced that Ufuk Talay would depart the club at the end of the season. The following week, assistant coach Giancarlo Italiano was announced as the next head coach on a 2-year deal. On 10 May, the Phoenix announced the departures of eight players, including vice-captain Oliver Sail, Clayton Lewis, Steven Ugarkovic and Callan Elliot. On 11 May, the Phoenix announced their first signing of the off-season in Mohamed Al-Taay on a two-year deal from the Newcastle Jets FC, Newcastle Jets. On 18 May, it was announced that Nicholas Pennington had signed a one-year contract extension with the club. Wellington Phoenix Football Club is a professional association football, football club based in Wellington, New Zealand. It competes in the Australian A-League Men, under Professional sports league organization#Systems around the world, licence from Football Federation Australia. Phoenix entered the competition in the 2007–08 A-League, 2007–08 season after its formation in March 2007, by New Zealand Football to replace New Zealand Knights FC, New Zealand Knights as a New Zealand-based club in the Australian A-League competition. Western Suburbs Football Club is an association football club in Porirua, New Zealand. They play their home matches at Endeavour Park in the Porirua suburb of Whitby and compete in the Central Premier League. Luke Supyk (born 4 March 2006) is a New Zealand footballer who currently plays as a forward for Wellington Phoenix. Club career Born in Wellington, Supyk began his career in the academies of Waimakariri United and Nomads United before joining Wellington Phoenix in 2021. Having progressed through the academy, he was added to the club's reserve side, playing in the Central League, where he impressed with his goal-scoring prowess. Isaac Robert Hughes (born 25 March 2004) is an English-born, New Zealand footballer who plays for Wellington Phoenix. Club career Youth career Hughes played for both the Bolton Wanderers and Crewe Alexandra academies before moving to New Zealand at the age of 10. Wellington Phoenix Hughes made his Wellington Phoenix debut on 27 August 2023 against Melbourne City in the Australia Cup as a second-half substitute. On 13 September 2023, Hughes signed a two-year contract with the first team after captaining the reserves side. Fin Conchie
Fin Ngahina Roa Conchie (born 10 August 2003) is a New Zealand association footballer currently playing as a midfielder for the Wellington Phoenix in the A-League Men. Career Roa Conchie rose through the ranks of the juniors system at Wellington Phoenix. Whilst playing for the Wellington Phoenix FC Reserves against Petone in the 2023 New Zealand National League, Roa Conchie made a homophobic slur towards a Petone player, resulting in an altercation on the field. Whilst Roa Conchie was not sanctioned by the referee for the incident during the game, he later admitted to making the slur. He was stood down indefinitely by Wellington, and would later receive a 10-game ban. Wellington Phoenix stood by Roa Conchie and signed him to a 3-year contract. Lukas Eric Kelly-Heald (born 18 March 2005) is a New Zealand professional footballer who plays as a centre-back or left-back for Wellington Phoenix. His twin brother Alby Kelly-Heald, a goalkeeper, played for the same youth clubs and the Phoenix academy. Mohamed Al-Taay
Mohamed Al-Taay (; born 15 June 2000) is a professional football midfielder who plays for Western Sydney Wanderers. Born in Australia, he represents the Iraq national team. Early life Al-Taay was born in Campbelltown, New South Wales with two older brothers and one younger sister. Callan Rennie Elliot (born 7 July 1999) is a New Zealand professional footballer who plays as a right back for A-League club Auckland FC and the New Zealand national football team.
