2017–18 Úrvalsdeild Kvenna (basketball)
The 2017–18 Úrvalsdeild kvenna was the 61st season of the Úrvalsdeild kvenna, the top tier women's basketball league on Iceland. The season started on October 4, 2017 and concluded on April 30, 2018, with Haukar winning their fourth title after beating Valur 3–2 in the Úrvalsdeild finals. Helena Sverrisdóttir was named the Playoffs MVP after averaging 20.2 points, 12.2 rebounds and 10.8 assists in the finals series. Competition format The participating teams first play a conventional round-robin schedule with every team playing each opponent twice "home" and twice "away" for a total of 28 games. The top four teams qualify for the championship playoffs whilst the bottom team will be relegated to Division 1. Garðabær () is a town and municipality in the Capital Region of Iceland. History Garðabær is a growing town in the Capital Region. It is the fifth largest municipality in Iceland with a population of 20,116 (1 January 2025). The site of Garðabær has been inhabited since Iceland was first settled in the 9th century. Stjarnan Women's Basketball
The Stjarnan women's basketball team, commonly known as Stjarnan, is the women's basketball department of Ungmennafélagið Stjarnan, based in the town of Garðabær, Iceland. History In 2009, disgruntled Ármann players, unhappy with poor training facilities and lack of practice time, contacted Stjarnan and inquired if the board would be interested in starting a women's team. The board responded positively and in the end the entire Ármann team transferred over. Stjarnan finished first in the second-tier 1. deild kvenna in 2015 and defeated Njarðvík in the playoffs to win promotion to the top-tier Úrvalsdeild kvenna for the first time in its history. Ingi Þór Steinþórsson
Ingi Þór Steinþórsson (born 9 May 1972) is an Icelandic basketball coach. As head coach, Ingi Þór has won the Icelandic men's national championship and the women's national championship three times each. He was named Úrvalsdeild karla Coach of the Year in 2010, when he won the Úrvalsdeild karla title with the Snæfell while also being named Úrvalsdeild kvenna Coach of the Year three times, in 2014–2016, when he led Snæfell women's team to a three-peat. Ingi Þór served as an assistant coach at KR from 1998 to 1999 and 2008–2009, helping the club win the national championship in 2009. Stykkishólmur () is a town and municipality situated in the western part of Iceland, in the northern part of the Snæfellsnes peninsula. It is a center of services and commerce for the area. Sverrir Þór Sverrisson
Sverrir Þór Sverrisson (born 23 May 1975) is an Icelandic former basketball coach and player. A two-time Úrvalsdeild Defensive Player of the Year, he played several seasons in the Icelandic top-tier, winning national championship three times and the national cup twice. Following his playing career, he turned to coaching where he won several accolades and titles. As a coach he has won the Icelandic women's championship four times and the men's national championship once. Coaching career Sverrir retired from top level play in 2010 and took over as head coach of Njarðvík women's team. He led them to the national championship in 2012.
