2017–18 VTB United League
The 2017–18 VTB United League was the 9th complete season of the VTB United League. It is also the fifth season that the league functions as the Russian basketball league system, Russian domestic first tier level. It started on 5 October 2017 with the first round of the regular season and ended on 10 June 2018 with the championship game of the Final Four. PBC CSKA Moscow, CSKA Moscow were the defending champions. CSKA Moscow successfully defended its title as it won the final over BC Khimki, Khimki. Format changes From this season, the top eight teams qualify for the playoffs. These are played in a best-of-five format with a 1–2–2 structure. The four teams that win their playoff series qualify for the Final Four tournament, which decides the new champion. VTB United League
The VTB United League () is an international professional men's club basketball league that was founded in 2009. It is made up of mostly Russian clubs, along with one each from Belarus and Kazakhstan. Since 2013, it is the first tier of Russian professional club basketball. Therefore, the highest placed Russian team in the league can also be named the Russian national champions. The league is sponsored by Russian state-owned VTB Bank. In 2009 CSKA Moscow won VTB United League Promo-Cup, but this competition does not count as official VTB title. CSKA has dominated the league, having won majority of titles its existence. The VTB United League also holds a youth competition, the VTB United Youth League. VEF Rīga is a Latvian professional basketball team that is based in Riga, Latvia. VEF Rīga is an twelven-time Latvian Basketball League champion. History Early years The club name VEF came from the radio manufacturing company VEF which created the basketball club in 1958. VEF Rīga has been home to some of the best Latvian players for over five decades. Alexander Gomelsky Universal Sports Hall CSKA, also known as USH CSKA, and formerly known as CSKA Palace of Sports, was a multi-purpose indoor sporting arena located in Moscow, Russia. It formed part of the CSKA Sports Complex and was primarily used to host basketball and futsal games, but it can also be used to host boxing matches, volleyball games, handball games, tennis, gymnastics, artistic gymnastics, wrestling, fencing, martial arts, and other sports. The arena can also be used for dancing and other entertainment events. The seating capacity of the arena for basketball games was 5,000. The Saryarka Velodrome (, ''Saryarqa velotregi''; ) is an indoor cycle-racing track or velodrome that is located in Astana, Kazakhstan. Construction Constructed in the shape of a Bicycle helmet, racer's helmet, the velodrome is a unique sports complex that not only houses a cycling track, but its 58,000 metre square surface area also contains a sports courts, a fitness centre, a swimming pool, a basketball court, an ice rink, as well as conference halls, a restaurant and a hotel. Astana Basketball Club (), commonly referred to as BC Astana, is a Kazakh professional basketball club that is based in Astana, Kazakhstan. Founded in 2011, it has competed in the Kazakhstan Basketball Championship and the VTB United League since, obtaining many domestic titles in the process.
