2017 Campeonato Brasileiro Série D
The 2017 Campeonato Brasileiro Série D, the fourth level of the Brazilian League, was contested by 68 clubs. The competition started on 21 May and ended on 10 September 2017. Atlético Acreano, Globo, Juazeirense and Operário Ferroviário qualified for the semi-finals and were promoted to the 2018 Campeonato Brasileiro Série C. Operário Ferroviário won the title after defeating Globo in the final. Competition format In the first stage, 68 teams were divided into seventeen groups of four, organized regionally. The teams played home and away against the other three teams in their group, a total of six games. The winner of each group plus the best 15 runners-up qualified for the second stage. From the second stage on the competition was played as a knock-out tournament with each round contested over two legs. The four semi-finalists qualified for the 2018 Campeonato Brasileiro Série C. The Campeonato Brasileiro Série D (English: Brazilian Championship Serie D), commonly known as the Série D or the Brazilian Série D to distinguish it from the Italian Serie D, is the fourth division of the Brazilian football league system, and was announced by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) on 9 April 2008. The Campeonato Brasileiro Série D was formed from the split of the Campeonato Brasileiro Série C, Série C, keeping its best 20 clubs and playing double round robin as does the top three divisions. The Série D keeps the same format of the older Série C, but with participation limited to 40 clubs recognized by the state federation. In 2016 the Série D was expanded to 68 clubs, but in 2022 it was reduced to 64 clubs. The Série D format is a mixed system: the 64 clubs are divided in 8 groups organized regionally, playing in a Round-robin tournament, round-robin format. The 2018 Campeonato Brasileiro Série C was a football competition held in Brazil, equivalent to the third division. The competition started on 14 April and ended on 22 September 2018.
