Nemzeti Bajnokság II
The NB II, currently known as the Merkantil Bank Liga for sponsorship reasons, is the second tier of Hungarian football. At the end of the 2004–05 season, the tournament format was changed from one division of 14 teams to two divisions: ''Keleti'' (Eastern) and ''Nyugati'' (Western), each with 16 teams, though now it's just one league table with 16 teams as of the 2024–25 season. The champion and the runner-up will ascend to the first division while the two lowest teams in NB II are relegated to NB III. Format On 2 March 2017, the Hungarian Football Federation announced that the number of the teams in the Nemzeti Bajnokság II will not be reduced to 12. From 2024 onwards, the league was reduced to 16 teams from 20 and 18 teams in 2022–2024, respectively. History The second league was founded in 1901, having 8 teams. The 2002–03 Nemzeti Bajnokság I, also known as NB I, was the 101st season of top-tier football in Hungary. The league was officially named ''Borsodi Liga'' for sponsoring reasons. The season started on 26 July 2002 and ended on 31 May 2003. Overview It was contested by 12 teams, and MTK Hungária FC won the championship under Sándor Egervári. MTK won the league on the last day of the season, at Újpest's stadium, Megyeri Road. The white and blues defeated Újpest 1-0, while Ferencváros were unable to overcome Debrecen, and had to settle for a 2nd place finish. Budapest Honvéd suffered a relegation for the first time in their history. Their drop to the division below was confirmed on the 23rd of May, after losing 3-1 at defending champions Zalaegerszeg. Tatabányai Sport Club is a Hungarian football club based in Tatabánya, Komárom-Esztergom, Hungary. The team set to play in Nemzeti Bajnokság II from 2024–25, the second tier of Hungarian football after promotion from Nemzeti Bajnokság III in 2023–24. At this time several Hungarian towns outside of Budapest had formed football teams – Debrecen, Miskolc, Győr.
