1986–87 Winnipeg Jets Season
The 1986–87 Winnipeg Jets season was the 15th season of the Winnipeg Jets, their eighth in the National Hockey League. The Jets placed third in the Smythe Division to qualify for the playoffs. The Jets defeated the Calgary Flames in the first round but lost the Division Final to the Edmonton Oilers. This was the last playoff series win for the original Jets before they moved to Phoenix, Arizona. Offseason After a poor 1985–86 season, in which the Jets fired head coach Barry Long and replaced him on an interim basis with general manager John Ferguson, the team hired Dan Maloney to become the new head coach on June 20, 1986. Maloney had previously been the head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs from 1984 to 1986, posting a 45-100-15 record with the Leafs during that span. Teppo Numminen
Teppo Kalevi Numminen (born July 3, 1968) is a Finnish former professional ice hockey defenceman who played in the National Hockey League (NHL). He played for Tappara and TuTo of the SM-liiga and the Winnipeg Jets, Phoenix Coyotes, Dallas Stars and Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League (NHL). Playing career Numminen started his career with his local team, Tappara, in the SM-liiga. Drafted in the second round (twenty-ninth overall) in the 1986 NHL Entry Draft by the Winnipeg Jets, Numminen moved to North America in 1988 to play for the Jets. He moved with the team as it became the Phoenix Coyotes before the 1996–97 season. He played in the NHL All-Star Game in 1999, 2000 and 2001. After fifteen seasons playing for the Winnipeg/Phoenix organization, Numminen was traded to the Dallas Stars in July 2003, for Mike Sillinger. 1986–87 Edmonton Oilers Season
The 1986–87 Edmonton Oilers season was the Oilers' eighth season in the NHL, and they were coming off a heart breaking playoff loss to the Calgary Flames the year before, ending the Oilers' bid for a third-straight Stanley Cup. Edmonton won the Presidents' Trophy, as they finished with 106 points and won their sixth straight Smythe Division title. There was no postseason upset this year, as Oilers defeated the Philadelphia Flyers in the Final to win their third Stanley Cup in four years, although the Flyers did push the Finals series to seven games. As of this is the Oilers' most recent division title, making it the longest such active drought in the North American major professional sports leagues. Nevertheless, Edmonton would go on to win two more Stanley Cups over the next three seasons. Patrick Jacques Roy (; born October 5, 1965) is a Canadian retired professional ice hockey goaltender and executive, who serves as the head coach for the Quebec Remparts of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). In 2017, Roy was named one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players in history. Nicknamed "Saint Patrick," Roy split his playing career in the National Hockey League (NHL) between the Montreal Canadiens, with whom he played for 11 years, and the Colorado Avalanche, with whom he played for eight years. Roy won four Stanley Cups during his career, two with each franchise. Brian Hayward
Brian George Hayward (born June 25, 1960) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey goaltender who currently serves as a color analyst for Anaheim Ducks broadcasts on Prime Ticket/ Fox Sports West and KDOC. Playing career Hayward played college hockey at Cornell University from 1978–1982. In his senior season he was named first team All-Ivy, All-ECAC and was an All-American. He set a school record with 2,225 saves and had a career won-lost record of 42-27-2. Undrafted, Hayward signed a free agent contract with the Winnipeg Jets and moved between the Jets and their AHL affiliate for several years before becoming a regular NHL player. Joseph Romeo Steve Penney (born February 7, 1961) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey goaltender. Penney played with the Montreal Canadiens and original Winnipeg Jets of the National Hockey League. Early life Penney was born in Sainte-Foy, Quebec. As a youth, he played in the 1974 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with a minor ice hockey team from Sainte-Foy. Career Penney made his NHL debut with a handful of games left in the 1983-84 NHL season when Canadiens coach Jacques Lemaire, dissatisfied with the play of regular goaltending tandem Rick Wamsley and Richard Sevigny, called up the 23-year-old Penney from the AHL and made him the starting goaltender for the 1984 Stanley Cup playoffs.
