1986–87 Edmonton Oilers Season
The 1986–87 Edmonton Oilers season was the Oilers' Edmonton Oilers seasons, eighth Season (sports), season in the National Hockey League, following a playoff loss to the Calgary Flames the season before, ending the Oilers' bid for a third-straight Stanley Cup. Edmonton won the Presidents' Trophy, as they finished with 106 points and won their sixth straight Smythe Division title. There was no postseason upset this year, as Oilers defeated the Philadelphia Flyers in the 1987 Stanley Cup Finals, Stanley Cup Finals to win their third Stanley Cup in four years, although the Flyers did push the Finals series to seven games. As of this is the Oilers' most recent regular season division title, making it the longest such active drought in the North American major professional sports leagues. The Calgary Flames are a professional ice hockey team based in Calgary. The Quebec Nordiques (, pronounced in Quebec French, in Canadian English; translated "Northmen" or "Northerners") were a professional ice hockey team based in Quebec City. Winnipeg Jets (1972–1996)
The Winnipeg Jets were a professional ice hockey team based in Winnipeg. They began play in the World Hockey Association (WHA) in 1972. The club joined the National Hockey League (NHL) in 1979 after the NHL merged with the WHA. Due to mounting financial troubles, in 1996 the franchise moved to Phoenix, Arizona, and became the Phoenix Coyotes (the former name of the now inactive Arizona Coyotes). The team played their home games at Winnipeg Arena. The Jets' WHA years were successful, with the team making the playoffs every year except for the 1974–75 season. Paul Coffey
Paul Patrick Coffey (born June 1, 1961) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman who played for nine teams over 21 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL). Known for his speed and scoring prowess, Coffey ranks second all-time among NHL defencemen in Goal (ice hockey), goals, Assist (ice hockey), assists, and Point (ice hockey), points, behind only Ray Bourque. He won the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the NHL's best defenceman three times and was voted to eight end-of-season All-Star teams (four first-team and four second-team). He holds the record for the most goals by a defenceman in one season, 48 in 1985–86, and is the only defenceman to have scored 40 goals more than once, also doing it in 1983–84. Esa Tikkanen
Esa Tikkanen (born January 25, 1965) is a Finnish former professional ice hockey forward. He played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Edmonton Oilers, New York Rangers, St. Louis Blues, New Jersey Devils, Vancouver Canucks, Florida Panthers, and the Washington Capitals, and won the Stanley Cup five times in his career, including in 1985, 1987, 1988, 1990 with the Oilers, and 1994 with the Rangers. Jari Kurri
Jari Pekka Kurri (; born 18 May 1960) is a Finnish former professional ice hockey player. Beginning in 1980, he played Winger (ice hockey), right wing for five National Hockey League (NHL) teams: the Edmonton Oilers, the Los Angeles Kings, the New York Rangers, the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, and the Colorado Avalanche. Kurri played 17 seasons in the NHL and was the first Finnish player to be enshrined into the Hockey Hall of Fame, in 2001. He was a member of a Stanley Cup-winning team five times, all with the Oilers. In 2017, Kurri was named one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players in history. The Hart Memorial Trophy, originally known as the Hart Trophy, is an annual award for the most valuable player to his team in the National Hockey League (NHL), voted by the members of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association. The Art Ross Trophy is awarded to the National Hockey League (NHL) player who leads the league in Point (ice hockey), points at the end of the regular season. It was presented to the league by former player, general manager, and head coach Art Ross. The trophy has been awarded 70 times to 29 players since its introduction in the 1947–48 NHL season. 1987 Stanley Cup Finals
The 1987 Stanley Cup Final was the championship series of the National Hockey League's (NHL) , and the culmination of the Stanley Cup playoffs. It was contested between the Edmonton Oilers and the Philadelphia Flyers in a rematch of the Final. Despite blowing a 3-1 series lead, the Oilers defeated the Flyers in seven gamesthe first seven-game Final since for their third Stanley Cup victory.
