1982–83 Detroit Red Wings Season
The 1982–83 Detroit Red Wings season was the Red Wings' 51st season, 57th overall for the franchise. They finished fifth in the Norris Division and missed the playoffs for the fifth consecutive season. Offseason After fifty years of Norris family ownership, Bruce A. Norris, who had himself owned the Red Wings since his father's passing in 1952, sold the Red Wings to Little Caesars Pizza founder Mike Ilitch. Ilitch then proceeded to hire general manager Jim Devellano away from the three-time defending Stanley Cup champion New York Islanders. Nick Polano was then hired as head coach, coming from the Buffalo Sabres where he had served as an assistant under Scotty Bowman. Under this new management, the Red Wings opted to modernize their uniforms. The crew collars were replaced with V-necks, and the logo was realigned to be centered on the jersey, instead of having the wheel centered underneath the collar. 2014 Winter Classic
The 2014 NHL Winter Classic was an outdoor ice hockey game played in the National Hockey League (NHL) on January 1, 2014, at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The sixth edition of the Winter Classic, it matched the Toronto Maple Leafs against the Detroit Red Wings; the Maple Leafs defeated the Red Wings, 3–2, in a shootout to move past the Red Wings in the Atlantic Division. The game was televised nationally in Canada on CBC and nationally in the United States on NBC. The game set an NHL attendance record of 105,491, surpassing the previous record set during the 2008 NHL Winter Classic. 1982–83 Quebec Nordiques Season
The 1982–83 Quebec Nordiques season was the Nordiques fourth season in the National Hockey League. In the 1981–82 season, Quebec recorded their first winning season in the NHL, as they had a record of 34–34–12, earning 80 points, in which they finished fourth in the Adams Division, qualifying for the post-season for the second consecutive season. The Nordiques lost in the first round of the playoffs to the Boston Bruins. The Quebec Nordiques (, pronounced in Quebec French, in Canadian English; translated "Northmen" or "Northerners") were a professional ice hockey team based in Quebec City. The 1982–83 Chicago Black Hawks season was the 57th season of operation of the Chicago Black Hawks in the National Hockey League. Offseason During the off-season, the Black Hawks hired Orval Tessier to become the head coach of the club. Tessier spent parts of three seasons playing in the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins from 1954 to 1961. As a head coach, Tessier led the Cornwall Royals to the 1972 Memorial Cup championship, and also led the Kitchener Rangers to the 1981 Memorial Cup final. Tessier then led the New Brunswick Hawks to the 1981–82 Calder Cup. This would be Tessier's first NHL head coaching job. At the 1982 NHL entry draft, the Black Hawks selected Ken Yaremchuk with their first round draft pick, seventh overall. 1982–83 Calgary Flames Season
The 1982–83 Calgary Flames season was the third season in Calgary and 11th for the Flames franchise in the National Hockey League. Despite finishing the season below .500, the Flames had their best ever finish in the division standings, placing second in the Smythe Division. In the playoffs, Calgary was able to avenge the previous season's defeat at the hands of the Vancouver Canucks by knocking off Vancouver in four games. In the second round, the Flames met up with their provincial rivals, the Edmonton Oilers, for the first time. The series would not be close, as Edmonton powered past Calgary in five games, including humiliating 10–2 and 9–1 victories over the Flames. The 1982–83 Winnipeg Jets season was the 11th season of the Winnipeg Jets, their fourth season in the National Hockey League. Offseason After a very successful 1981–82 season, in which the club made the playoffs for the first time since joining the NHL in 1979, the Jets had a quiet off-season. With the Colorado Rockies moving to East Rutherford, New Jersey and becoming the New Jersey Devils, the NHL underwent realignment, and the Jets were shifted from the Norris Division back to the Smythe Division, where the team spent their first two seasons from 1979 to 1981. Winnipeg Jets (1972–1996)
The Winnipeg Jets were a professional ice hockey team based in Winnipeg. They began play in the World Hockey Association (WHA) in 1972. The club joined the National Hockey League (NHL) in 1979 after the NHL merged with the WHA. Due to mounting financial troubles, in 1996 the franchise moved to Phoenix, Arizona, and became the Phoenix Coyotes (the former name of the now inactive Arizona Coyotes). The team played their home games at Winnipeg Arena. The Jets' WHA years were successful, with the team making the playoffs every year except for the 1974–75 season.
