1982–83 Chicago Black Hawks Season
The 1982–83 Chicago Black Hawks season was the 57th season of operation of the Chicago Black Hawks in the National Hockey League. Offseason During the off-season, the Black Hawks hired Orval Tessier to become the head coach of the club. Tessier spent parts of three seasons playing in the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins from 1954 to 1961. As a head coach, Tessier led the Cornwall Royals to the 1972 Memorial Cup championship, and also led the Kitchener Rangers to the 1981 Memorial Cup final. Tessier then led the New Brunswick Hawks to the 1981–82 Calder Cup. This would be Tessier's first NHL head coaching job. At the 1982 NHL entry draft, the Black Hawks selected Ken Yaremchuk with their first round draft pick, seventh overall. Yaremchuk played with the Portland Winter Hawks of the WHL in 1981–82, scoring 58 goals and 157 points in 72 games. 1981 Memorial Cup
The 1981 Memorial Cup occurred May 3–15 at the Windsor Arena in Windsor, Ontario. It was the 63rd annual Memorial Cup competition and determined the major junior ice hockey champion of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL). Participating teams were the winners of the Ontario Hockey League, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and Western Hockey League which were the Kitchener Rangers, Cornwall Royals and Victoria Cougars. Cornwall won their second Memorial Cup in a row and third overall, defeating Kitchener in the final game. Smythe Division
The National Hockey League's Smythe Division was formed in 1974 as part of the Clarence Campbell Conference. The division existed for 19 seasons until 1993. It was named in honour of Conn Smythe, who was a longtime owner, general manager, and head coach in the league. It is the forerunner of the NHL's Northwest Division and Pacific Division. New Jersey Devils
The New Jersey Devils are a professional ice hockey team based in Newark, New Jersey. Colorado Rockies (NHL)
The Colorado Rockies were a professional ice hockey team in the National Hockey League (NHL) that played in Denver from 1976 to 1982. They were founded as the Kansas City Scouts, an expansion team that began play in the NHL in the 1974–75 season. The Scouts moved from Kansas City, Missouri, to Denver for the 1976–77 season. After six seasons in Denver, the franchise moved to East Rutherford, New Jersey, for the 1982–83 season and was renamed the New Jersey Devils. Terry Ruskowski
Terry W. Ruskowski (born December 31, 1954) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey centre and coach. He played for the Chicago Black Hawks, Los Angeles Kings, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Minnesota North Stars in the National Hockey League (NHL), and for the Houston Aeros and Winnipeg Jets of the World Hockey Association (WHA). He won the Avco World Trophy with Houston in 1975 and with Winnipeg in 1979. Ruskowski's leadership on the ice was recognized with his tenure as captain of the Aeros, Black Hawks, Kings, and Penguins, the only player in major professional history to captain four clubs. As a coach, Ruskowski was most recently the head coach and general manager for the Quad City Mallards of the ECHL. The Portland Winterhawks are a junior ice hockey team based in Portland, Oregon. Founded in 1950 as the Edmonton Oil Kings, the team relocated to Portland in 1976 and was known as the Winter Hawks until 2009.
