1982 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final
The 1982 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship final was the 95th All-Ireland Final and the deciding match of the 1982 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, an inter-county Gaelic football tournament for the top teams in Ireland. The game, played at Croke Park in Dublin, culminated in one of the most famous goals of all time. Kerry entered the match as heavy favourite to complete an unprecedented five consecutive All-Ireland SFC titles, having won the previous four titles in a run that stretched back to 1978. The 1982 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship was the 96th staging of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, the Gaelic Athletic Association's premier inter-county Gaelic football tournament. The championship began on 9 May 1982 and ended on 19 September 1982. It was the last year to date that a Kilkenny team played in the Leinster championship. Kerry were the defending champions and were hoping to win a record-breaking fifth successive championship title. Kerry qualified for the final. Matt Connor (born 9 July 1959 in Walsh Island, County Offaly) is an Irish former Gaelic footballer who played for his local club Walsh Island and at senior level for the Offaly county team from 1978 until 1984, when he was seriously injured in a car crash. Thomas Connor (1842 – Unknown) was a U.S. sailor stationed aboard the during the American Civil War. He received the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Second Battle of Fort Fisher on January 15, 1865. Military service Emigrating from his native Ireland, Connor volunteered for service in the U.S. Navy and was assigned to the Union steam frigate . His enlistment is credited to the state of Maryland. Stephen Mark Darby (born 6 October 1988) is an English former professional footballer who played as a right-back. Darby represented England at under-19 level. He began his career playing on the winning side of the Liverpool FA Youth Cup in 2006 and played competitively for Liverpool from 2008 to 2012. Patrick William Fitzgerald Jr. (born December 2, 1974) is an American former football player and coach. He served as the head football coach of the Northwestern Wildcats from July 2006 until he was fired in July 2023 in the aftermath of a hazing scandal. Fitzgerald was promoted following the sudden death of head coach Randy Walker prior to the 2006 season. Michael Fitzgerald (born 10 May 1970) is a retired Irish National Hunt jockey and current television racing pundit. Fitzgerald rode for the majority of his career in Great Britain and less often Ireland. Career as a Jockey Mick Fitzgerald's career lasted for over 15 years. Brendan Lowry (born 11 July 1959) is an Irish people, Irish former Gaelic footballer who played for his local club Ferbane GAA, Ferbane and for the Offaly county football team, Offaly senior county team from 1981 until 1992. He attended St Joseph & St Saran's Secondary School in Ferbane. Seán Lowry (born 24 February 1952) is an Irish former Gaelic footballer. His league and championship career at senior level with the Offaly and Mayo county teams spanned fifteen seasons from 1971 to 1985. Lowry made his debut on the inter-county scene at the age of seventeen when he was selected for the Offaly minor team. He spent two championship seasons with the minor team, however, he enjoyed little success during that time. Lowry subsequently joined the Offaly under-21 team, winning All-Ireland U21FC medals in 1971 and 1973. Mick Lowry (born 8 October 1960) is an Irish former Gaelic footballer whose league and championship career with the Offaly senior county team spanned eleven seasons from 1980 to 1991. "Five in a Row" was a song released in advance of the 1982 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final to celebrate Kerry's imminent winning of five consecutive titles. ''The Irish Times'' has described it as "infamous". The song's chorus features such lines as: "Five in a row, five in a row, never again will there be five in a row" and "It's hard to believe we've won the five in a row". Kerry, however, had not won the fifth title; they still had a game to play and faced Offaly in the decider. Offaly manager Eugene McGee played the song in his team's dressing room ahead of the game. With Kerry leading by two points approaching the game's conclusion, Séamus Darby scored a critical goal (worth three points) to give Offaly the lead.
