1981–82 John Player Cup
The 1981–82 John Player Cup was the 11th edition of England's premier rugby union club competition at the time. Gloucester and Moseley shared the title after playing out a 12-12 draw in the final. The event was sponsored by John Player cigarettes and the final was held at Twickenham Stadium. The Anglo-Welsh Cup (), was a cross-border rugby union knock-out cup competition that featured the 12 Premiership Rugby clubs and the four Welsh regions. It was a created as a replacement for the RFU Knockout Cup, which featured only English clubs. The competition was replaced by the Premiership Rugby Cup, involving only the 12 English Premiership clubs, beginning with the 2018–19 season. History Background RFU Knockout Cup From 1971 to 2005, English clubs played in the RFU Knockout Cup. At its formation, it was the highest honour that a club could win, as there were no nationally organised leagues until merit leagues were introduced in 1984, followed by the full national league pyramid in 1987. Gordon Alan Frank Sargent (18 October 1949 - 25 June 2013) was an English rugby union international. Sargent grew up in the town of Lydney near Gloucester and attended Lydney Secondary School. A prop, Sargent spent nine seasons at his hometown club Lydney RFC, before crossing to Gloucester in 1976. He featured in two John Player Cup title wins at Gloucester and was a Gloucestershire county captain. John Fidler (rugby Union)
John Howard Fidler (born 16 September 1948) is an English former rugby union international who represented England in four Test matches. His son Rob Fidler also represented England. A Cheltenham Colts product, Fidler was a regular fixture in the second row for Gloucester and won five county championships with Gloucestershire. He was a policeman by profession. Fidler's England caps didn't come until he was in his 30s, making his debut in the 1981 tour of Argentina. He also played Tests for England in the 1984 tour of South Africa, after which he announced his retirement. Michael Clive Teague (born 8 October 1960) is an English rugby union player who played for the British Lions. Early life Teague was born and raised on a farm a few miles outside Gloucester. He attended Churchdown School. Personal life Teague married his long term fiancée Lorraine in August 1989 after the British Lions tour to Australia, with his Gloucester back row colleague John Gadd as his best man. Leicester Tigers, Leicester won the competition for a third consecutive year defeating Gosforth Rugby Football Club, Gosforth in the final.
