1980–81 John Player Cup
The 1980–81 John Player Cup was the tenth edition of England's premier rugby union club competition at the time. Leicester Tigers, Leicester won the competition for a third consecutive year defeating Gosforth Rugby Football Club, Gosforth in the final. The competition was extended with extra rounds replacing the previous format of 32 teams only. The event was sponsored by John Player cigarettes and the final was held at Twickenham Stadium. Anglo-Welsh Cup
The Anglo-Welsh Cup (), was a cross-border rugby union knock-out cup competition that featured the 12 Premiership Rugby clubs and the four Welsh regions. It was a created as a replacement for the RFU Knockout Cup, which featured only English clubs. The competition was replaced by the Premiership Rugby Cup, involving only the 12 English Premiership clubs, beginning with the 2018–19 season. History Background RFU Knockout Cup From 1971 to 2005, English clubs played in the RFU Knockout Cup. At its formation, it was the highest honour that a club could win, as there were no nationally organised leagues until merit leagues were introduced in 1984, followed by the full national league pyramid in 1987. Steve Johnson (rugby Union)
Steve Johnson is a former Leicester Tigers and England blindside flanker. He made 207 appearances during the period 1976-83 for Leicester Tigers. Johnson scored 31 tries for the Tigers and captained the club from 1981 to 1983, making his final appearance in the John Player Cup final against Bristol. He was on the winning side three times in five cup finals and represented Leicestershire, Midlands, British Police and England B. He also came second in a Leicester Mercury vote which would be in the Leicester Tigers' walk of fame, as Leicester Tigers best ever blindside flanker. Paul Simpson (rugby Union)
Paul Donald Simpson (born 7 June 1958) is an English former rugby union international. Simpson was born in Leeds and attended The John Bentley School in Calne, Wiltshire. A back-rower, Simpson played his early rugby with Gosforth and was then at Bath from 1982 until retirement. Colin White (rugby Union)
Colin White (31 March 1947 - 19 January 2011) was an English rugby union international. Born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, White was a prop with local club Gosforth RFC, where he played in two John Player Cup title wins and served as club captain. While working as tree surgeon in 1978, he lost three fingers on his right hand in a chainsaw accident, but was able to continue his career. He gained an England in 1983, debuting in a win over the All Blacks at home, then was capped a further three times in the 1984 Five Nations Championship. Stephen Bainbridge (born 7 October 1956) is a former international rugby union player. In 1983 he toured with the British and Irish Lions on their tour to New Zealand and in the 1987 Rugby World Cup. Richard Breakey
Richard Breakey (born 14 November 1956) is a former Scotland international rugby union player. He played for Scotland in the 1978 Five Nations tournament. Personal Breakey was educated at Fettes College and Durham University (Hatfield College). Chalkie White (rugby Player)
Herbert Victor "Chalkie" White (16 January 1929 – 24 January 2005) was an English rugby union player and later coach, instrumental in the success of Leicester Tigers. White was born in Carlisle and served in the Royal Navy before becoming a schoolteacher, having previously undertaken a 4-year specialist course in Physical Education at Borough Road College, Isleworth. He played scrum-half for Old Creightonians, Penzance & Newlyn, Camborne RFC and Leicester Tigers before his career was ended after he was diagnosed with Ménière's disease and lost his sense of balance. He thus turned to coaching Leicester, while teaching at Nottingham High School. At this time the game was still amateur, and coaching frowned upon as "cheating", but White installed a professional attitude at Leicester. Robin Cowling
Robin James Cowling (born ) is an English retired rugby union player. He won 8 caps for between 1977 and 1979, and played 216 games for Gloucester Rugby between 1967 and 1974 before playing 184 times for Leicester Tigers between 1974 and his retirement in 1981. Career Cowling was born in Ipswich, Suffolk, but moved to the South West as a small baby. His mother was from Gloucester, his grandfather was a former captain of Gloucester Rugby, and his uncle was John A'Bear, who toured with the British Lions in 1936. Cowling made his Gloucester debut on October 21, 1967, as a hooker, against Newport. He quickly switched to his henceforth regular position of loosehead prop and was a regular in the side from December 1967. Peter Wheeler (rugby Union)
Peter John Wheeler, CBE (born 26 November 1948) is a former international rugby union player who played Hooker (rugby union), hooker and was Chief Executive of Leicester Tigers. Early life Wheeler attended Brockley County Grammar School and went on to play for Old Brockleians Rugby Club and Kent for three seasons.
