1979–80 Úrvalsdeild Karla (basketball)
The 1979–80 Úrvalsdeild karla was the 29th season of the Úrvalsdeild karla, the top tier men's basketball league on Iceland. The season started on October 13, 1979 and ended on March 17, 1980. Valur won its first title by posting the best record in the league with a win against KR in the last day of the season. Competition format The participating teams first played a conventional round-robin schedule with every team playing each opponent twice "home" and twice "away" for a total of 20 games. The top team won the national championship whilst the bottom team was relegated to Division I. Regular season Notable occurrences *On 17 November, John Johnson set a Úrvalsdeild record when he scored 71 points in Fram's 104-92 victory against ÍS. The 1978–79 Úrvalsdeild karla was the 28th season of the Úrvalsdeild karla, the top tier men's basketball league on Iceland. The season started on 14 October 1978 and ended on 29 March 1979. KR won its 7th title by posting the best record in the league. It secured the title by beating Valur, 77–75, in the last game of the season. KR Men's Basketball
The KR men's basketball team, commonly known as KR or KR Basket, is a professional basketball club based in Reykjavík, Iceland. It is the men's basketball department of Knattspyrnufélag Reykjavíkur (English: Reykjavík Football Club) multi-sport club. It has won the Icelandic championship eighteen times, the most national championships in the men's top-tier league history. In 2017 the club played in FIBA Europe Cup for the first time since 2008. KR has a men's reserve team that plays in the amateur level Icelandic 3rd-tier Division II and the Icelandic basketball cup, called KR-b. It is also affiliated with Knattspyrnufélag Vesturbæjar. ''Dagblaðið'' () was an Icelandic newspaper founded in 1975 by former employees of Vísir with Jónas Kristjánsson as its first editor. It marked a breakthrough in Icelandic newspaper publication as it was the first major newspaper that was independent of political parties. Its first edition was published on 8 September the same year. On 26 November 1981, Dagblaðið and Vísir merged to form Dagblaðið Vísir. Gunnar Þorvarðarson
Gunnar Þorvarðarson (born 11 June 1951) is an Icelandic former basketball player and coach and a former member of the Icelandic national basketball team. As a player and coach, he was a member of six national championships with Njarðvík. Career Gunnar spent his entire playing career with ÍKF/Njarðvík. In 1983, he became a player-coach for Njarðvík and led the team to three straight national championships. In 1986, he was hired as the head coach of Keflavík. In 1990, Gunnar signed a 2-year contract to coach Grindavík. In 2005, Gunnar returned to the sidelines as an assistant coach to Einar Árni Jóhannsson with the Njarðvík's team that went on to win the 2006 national championship. Danny Shouse
Daniel "Danny" Shouse (born October 23, 1958) is an American former professional basketball player who won two Icelandic championships with Úrvalsdeild club Njarðvík in 1981 and 1982. He set the Icelandic single game scoring record in 1979 when he scored 100 points in a Division I game. College Shouse played for Peru State College from 1977 to 1979 and left as their all-time leading scorer with 1,867 points. He was inducted into the schools hall of fame in 1998. Playing career Shouse joined the Ármann of the Icelandic second-tier Division I in 1979. He first played during the Reykjavík basketball tournament, where he scored 64 and 70 points in his first two games. Jonathan M. Johnson (born 12 July 1955) is an American former basketball player and coach. He was part of the first influx of foreign basketball players in Iceland in the late 1970s. In 1979, he set the single game scoring record in the Icelandic top-tier Úrvalsdeild karla when he scored 71 points for Fram against ÍS. In 1980, he won the Icelandic championship and the Icelandic cup as an assistant coach with Valur. Early life Johnson was born and grew up in Los Angeles. ÍR Men's Basketball
The Íþróttafélag Reykjavíkur men's basketball team, commonly known as ÍR, is the men's basketball department of Íþróttafélag Reykjavíkur. It is based in Reykjavík, Iceland and was one of the pioneers of basketball in Iceland and one of the founding members of the men's Úrvalsdeild. From 1954 to 1977, the team won fifteen national championships. In 1964, it became the first Icelandic team to compete in a continental competition when it defeated the Collegians from Belfast, 71-17, in the first round of the 1964–65 FIBA European Champions Cup (now called EuroLeague).
