Group 5 consisted of three of the 32 teams entered into the European zone:Only 31 of the entered teams actually competed in the qualification tournament: West Germany national football team, West Germany qualified for 1974 FIFA World Cup, the World Cup automatically as host. England national football team, England, Poland national football team, Poland, and Wales national football team, Wales. These three teams competed on a home-and-away basis for one of the 9.5 spots in 1974 FIFA World Cup, the final tournament allocated to the European zone, with the group's winner claiming the place in the finals. The Germany national football team () represents Germany in men's international Association football, football and played its first match in 1908. The team is governed by the German Football Association (''Deutscher Fußball-Bund''), founded in 1900.
