Divizia A
Liga I (; ''First League''), also spelled as Liga 1 and officially known as SuperLiga for sponsorship reasons, is a professional association football league in Romania and the highest level of the Romanian football league system. Contested by 16 clubs, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation from and to Liga II. The teams play 30 matches each in the regular season, before entering the championship play-offs or the relegation play-outs according to their position in the regular table. Liga I was established in 1909 and commenced play for the 1909–10 Divizia A, 1909–10 campaign, being currently 25th in UEFA's UEFA coefficient#League coefficient, league coefficient ranking list. It is administered by the Liga Profesionistă de Fotbal, also known by the acronym LPF. Before the 2006–07 Liga I, 2006–07 season, the competition was known as ''Divizia A'', but the name had to be changed following the finding that someone else had registered that trademark. Ion Neacșu (19 September 1930 – 10 May 1988) was a Romanian footballer. International career Ion Neacșu played ten international matches for Romania's national team, making his debut in a friendly game which ended with a 0–2 loss against Sweden. Alexandru Fronea
Alexandru Fronea (15 November 1933 – 10 April 2013) was a Romanian football defender who played for Romania in the 1960 European Nations' Cup. Club career He was a member of FC Petrolul Ploiești's "golden generation". He became national champion two times with Petrolul, in 1958 and 1959 and won the Romanian Cup in 1963. Vasile Sfetcu (10 May 1937 - 16 September 2016) was a Romanian football goalkeeper and manager. Club career Vasile Sfetcu was born on 10 May 1937 in Ploiești, Romania, starting to play football at junior level in 1951 at local club, Metalul, afterwards going to play for Petrolul Ploiești where he made his Divizia A debut on 24 November 1954 in a 3–1 away loss against Metalul Hunedoara. He went to play one season for Metalul 1 Mai Ploiești in Divizia B, afterwards he returned at Petrolul where in the first two seasons he won two consecutive Divizia A titles in 1957–58 and 1958–59, being used by coach Ilie Oană in 17 matches in the first one and in 20 in the second one. Nicolae Oaidă
Nicolae Oaidă (9 April 1933 – 18 January 2025) was a Romanian footballer and manager. Club career Oaidă was born in Bod, BraÈ™ov on 9 April 1933 and started playing football in 1946 at the youth center of local club, Steagul RoÈ™u, later in 1950 moving to neighboring club, Locomotiva. He made his Divizia A debut on 16 May 1954 playing for Dinamo BraÈ™ov in a 3–0 loss in front of Locomotiva TimiÈ™oara. After one season at Dinamo BraÈ™ov, Oaidă went to play for two seasons at Dinamo Bacău, managing to help the team earn a promotion to the first league in his first season spent there. Viorel Mateianu
Viorel Mateianu (1 June 1938 – 25 November 1997) was a Romanian football (soccer), football player and coach. Club career Mateianu was born in Lipănești, Prahova County, Prahova and started playing football in the Romanian lower leagues at Flacăra Boldești and Progresul CPCS București. Ion Alecsandrescu (17 July 1928 – 21 June 2000) was the president of Steaua București during the team's golden era, between 1985 and 1989. His nickname was ''Sfinxul'' () and was recently declared as ''Steaua Bucharest's Man of the Century''. 1958–59 Divizia B
The 1958–59 Divizia B was the 19th season of the second tier of the Romanian football league system. The format with two series has been maintained, both of them having 14 teams. At the end of the season only the winner of the first series promoted to Liga I, Divizia A, because the winner of the second series was ineligible for promotion and no teams relegated to Regional Championship, because the format will be expanded again starting with the next season.
