SANDARA PARK (born November 12, 1984 ), better known by her stage name DARA, is a South Korean singer , actress and host . Seen as one of the few most influential Korean stars in the Philippines
Philippines
due to the success of her multifaceted career, she was given the honorific national title "_Pambansang Krungkrung ng Pilipinas_", and was nicknamed the " BoA
BoA
of the Philippines" by Korean fans. She is recognized as a fashion and beauty icon because of her eccentric and distinct fashion style. Park is also acknowledged for acting as a bridge between Filipino and South Korean culture, and was given a plaque of appreciation by the Korea Tourism Organization for her contributions. Aspects of Park's personal life, including her relationships, family issues, and the fallout with Hero Angeles while still in the Philippines, attracted national attention as well.

Rising to fame in the early-2000s, Park became an overnight superstar while participating as a contestant during the first season of _Star Circle Quest _ in 2004, in which she finished as the runner-up. She signed with Star Magic
Star Magic
after the completion of the competition and officially began her music career with the self-titled extended play , _Sandara_, which debuted atop the Philippine
Philippine
charts and has sold over 100,000 physical copies. It remains the only album by a Korean born act to be certified platinum by the Philippine
Philippine
Association of the Record Industry . The carrier single, "In Or Out", was a major dance anthem and became a nationwide hit, cementing her status as an 'imported' household name in the region. The album's later repackaging featured a new single, "Walang Sabit", which became very popular as well. 2004 also saw her first lead acting role in the movie _Bcuz of U _, which won her the Best New Actress
Actress
award at the PMPC Star Awards for Movies. Park continued to dominate the Philippines
Philippines
market through 2005 with the major success of her comedy film _ Can This Be Love _, and the follow-up single "Ang Ganda Ko".

After suffering a stall in her career, Park returned to South Korea quietly in 2007 and signed with entertainment company, YG Entertainment . In 2009, she debuted as a member of 2NE1 , the company's first girl group . The quartet became one of the most successful girl groups in South Korea, and have enjoyed critical and commercial success in both music and image, the likes of which has led them to be globally acknowledged. In November 2016, YG CEO Yang Hyun-suk announced that 2NE1 had disbanded. Park remains signed with the entertainment company as a solo artist.

Park's first single release in South Korea, "Kiss " (2009), showcased a more mature sound that sharply deviated from her earlier music. 2NE1's hiatus in late 2014 allowed Park to refocus on her solo career and in 2015, subsequently headlined the web-dramas _ Dr. Ian _, _We Broke Up _, and _Missing Korea_. She won the "Best Actress" award at the K-web festival for her portrayal as Lee So-dam in _Dr. Ian_, and _We Broke Up_ became one of the highest viewed web-dramas of the year. Park was a fixed host on the highly rated variety program _Sugar Man _ (2015–2016), and appeared as a judge on _ Pinoy Boyband Superstar _ (2016). She currently appears as a host on _Get It Beauty_ (2017).

EARLY LIFE AND CAREER

Dara was born Sandara Park
Sandara Park
on November 12, 1984, in Busan, South Korea . Her unusual and rare three-syllable name stems from the childhood nickname of revolutionary war hero General Kim Yusin . He was a cousin to Queen Seondeok of Silla and is considered a national figurehead of Korean culture for having led the unification of the Korean peninsula . She is the daughter of Ik-Su Park, a trading businessman, and Kyung Ran-Kim. She is also the sister of Thunder , a former member of K-pop boy group MBLAQ , and has a younger sister named Durami. During the earliest years of her childhood, Sandara lived well due to her father running a successful business in trading, but following a strain incurred by relatives, the business went bankrupt and the family was sent into financial ruin. They then moved to Daegu
Daegu
in order to be closer to Park's grandmother. Despite efforts to revitalize his business, Park's father was unable to make ends meet, and he was eventually forced to leave his family in 1992 for the Philippines
Philippines
in hopes of rebuilding his career. Dara often stepped in and took care of her younger siblings in place of her mother since she worked long hours. Eventually, her father stabilized his career, and in 1995, was able to move the family to Alabang, Muntinlupa City , Philippines
Philippines
to begin a new life.

In 2004, during one of her school activities, she met Pauleen Luna , a former talent of ABS-CBN Corporation Channel 2's Talent Center. Luna encouraged Park to audition for _ Star Circle Quest
Star Circle Quest
_, a reality-based talent search television program. Over the course of the season, she escaped elimination several times, and reached the final ten contestants. Her Korean ethnicity resulted in some trouble with the daily exercises set by the panel of Filipino judges. During the last elimination round (in which only five people advanced), Park received approximately half a million text votes. She eventually finished in second place behind Hero Angeles .

Park joined ABS-CBN's entertainment stable, Star Magic
Star Magic
in the wake of her success in the show, with her projects ranging from commercial endorsements to television appearances. She starred in her first film _ Bcuz of U _ (2004), a three-story movie, alongside Hero Angeles , Kristine Hermosa and Heart Evangelista
Heart Evangelista
. Park won "Best New Actress", her first acting award, at the 21st Philippine
Philippine
Movie Press Club Star Awards for her performance. Park and Angeles collaborated again for another movie, _ Can This Be Love _ (2005), which reportedly grossed close to 100 million pesos. Park was also nominated for "Best Performance by an Actress
Actress
in a Leading Role (Musical or Comedy)" at the 2006 Golden Screen Awards. Her third movie in the country was _D\' Lucky Ones _ (2006) wherein she was paired with co-SCQ alumnus, Joseph Bitangcol due to Angeles' decision to retire from showbizness. In the same year, her fourth and last movie _ Super Noypi _ was shown in December and was an official entry into the 32nd Metro Manila Film Festival .

Park also embarked on a musical career that led to the release of her self-titled six-track album that contained the novelty dance hit "In or Out", a song that parodied her experiences on _ Star Circle Quest

Park left the Philippines

show business industry permanently and returned to South Korea

with her family on August 1, 2007.

LATER CAREER

2004–2008: PRE-DEBUT ACTIVITIES IN SOUTH KOREA

In December 2004, YG Entertainment 's Yang Hyun-suk offered Park workshop classes in South Korea
South Korea
after seeing the KBS Documentary _My Name Is Sandara Park_. In March 2005, Park went ahead with the workshops, putting her career in the Philippines

on hold. She later left the Philippines

show business industry permanently and returned to South Korea
South Korea
with her family on August 1, 2007. YG Entertainment announced the following day that Park had signed a contract with them.

Before her debut with 2NE1, she was cast in a minor role for the TV drama, _ The Return of Iljimae _ as Rie in 2008. Later, she appeared as the love interest of label mate T.O.P in Gummy 's music video for "I'm Sorry".

2009–2012: DEBUT WITH 2NE1 AND SOLO ACTIVITIES

Park took on the stage name Dara, and together with Bom , CL and Minzy , debuted as 2NE1. The group collaborated with label-mates Big Bang for the song "Lollipop ", before officially debuting on SBS 's _ The Music Trend _ on May 17, 2009 where they performed "Fire ". The group achieved significant success with the number-one single "I Don't Care" from their first extended play , _ 2NE1 _, which won them the "Song of the Year" award at the 2009 Mnet Asian Music Awards , making them the first rookie group to win a daesang in the same year of debut.

Apart from her group activities, Park quickly reentered the music scene. In 2009, Park was featured on G-Dragon 's debut solo album _Heartbreaker _, on the single "Hello". They performed the song on several music shows and also during G-Dragon's two-day solo concert _Shine a Light _ later that year. During that same year, Park released the digital single titled "Kiss ", becoming the first member of 2NE1 to do so. The song was produced by Teddy Park and featured fellow member CL as a rapper. It was used in Park's first endorsement commercial for Oriental Brewery 's Cass Beer series alongside actor Lee Min-ho . The music video was very popular, with the kiss scene between the two deemed one of the most famous events of 2009. Propelled in part by the popularity of the music video, the single charted strongly on various music charts despite strong competition, managing to replace G-dragon's Heartbreaker to top Bugs . The following year, Park made an appearance as the female lead in Taeyang 's "I Need A Girl" music video. Due to the specific lyrics in the song, Yang felt that she was the only candidate for the role. Two versions were made for the music video.

Due to frequent updates on 2NE1's activities and her close relationship with the public, fans dubbed her as the groups PR manager and was consequently promoted to Communications Director on April 18, 2011. In order to make her promotion official, YG Entertainment gave Park her own Certificate of Appointment.

On June 27, 2012, Park's Philippine
Philippine
movies were shown in Korea. The films _Bcuz of U_, _The Lucky Ones_, and _Can This Be Love_ were shown on the said date on Korea's Home Choice and SK Broadband.

In May 2014, ABS-CBN announced that Park would be guesting on _Pinoy Big Brother _, which simultaneously set off a media frenzy where news of her return dominated both the Philippines
Philippines
and worldwide Twitter trending topics. Her arrival was also one of the trending terms on Twitter, which welcomed her "home". She guested on the show on the 15th, and later appeared as a celebrity house-guest in the telecast _All In Über_ during its live episode. Park also appeared on _Gandang Gabi, Vice! _, one of the most popular talk shows in the Philippines hosted by Vice Ganda .

Back in Korea, Park shortly replaced close friend Yoo In-na as a DJ for her _Let\'s Crank Up the Volume _ radio program from May to June due to scheduling clashes. Later in the year, Park made a surprise cameo appearance as a top actress in the last episode of the highly rated Korean drama _ My Love from the Star _.

On November 12, BeFunny Studios made an unannounced release of a 3-part mini web series starring _The Walking Dead '_s Steven Yeun and Park titled _What's eating Steven Yeun_. Park played the role of Steven Yeun's American girlfriend who is left behind as her boyfriend pursues a career in "Mokbang", a popular Korean internet broadcast where generally attractive people eat in front of a webcam and get paid for it. The comedy sketch went viral and reached over a million views in the few days after release.

2015: WEB DRAMA SUCCESS AND _SUGAR MAN_

In 2015, seven years after her last acting role, Park returned to the small screen through the web-drama _ Dr. Ian _, starring alongside Kim Young-kwang . Expectations were high as the series featured Park in her first leading role since moving back to South Korea, coupled with the involvement of director Kwon Hyeok-chan (_Secret Garden _, _Master\'s Sun _). The series enjoyed global popularity, not only in Korea but also in the United States, Taiwan, and Thailand, surpassing 500,000 views within three days of its broadcasting. Park became the first actress to win the "Best Actress" award at the K-web festival for her performance.

The same month, Park featured in label-mate Jinusean
Jinusean
's stage for their single "Tell Me" on _You Hee-yeol\'s Sketchbook _. Her natural performance impressed the group which led to a second collaboration, where Park featured on their "Tell Me One More Time" comeback stage in place of the original singer, Jang Hana, on KBS2
KBS2
's _Music Bank _ on May 1. Dara at Twin Towers Alive Event Malaysia

Park then took on her second leading role in _ We Broke Up _, a web-drama based upon a web-toon of the same name. She played the role of Noh Woori, an optimistic and bright girl preparing to get a job. Premiering in June, the series was a success, becoming the fourth most watched web-drama on Naver with 16 million views. Due to the positive reception, the cast held a personal 'mini concert' on August 17. Park also made cameo appearances in the television series _The Producers _, playing a fictional _2 Days "> Sandara is considered to be one of the icons for modern-day South Korean beauty.

Park is one of the most in-demand faces in both the Philippines
Philippines
and South Korea, having appeared in many TV commercials and print ads over the course of her career. Park's huge popularity led to her instantly signing many Philippine
Philippine
and foreign endorsement deals ranging from personal care and food products to everyday items at the end of the competition. Her first endorsement was for Dong-A pens. Along with other Star Circle Quest
Star Circle Quest
finalists, Park modeled for and endorsed BNY Jeans in 2004. She served as the face for Tekki Asian Classic Noodles, and helped promote Canon , a Japanese camera brand looking to solidify their power in the Philippines. She endorsed Confident feminine napkins, and Rejoice shampoo as well. In addition to the shampoo's advertisements, Park also contributed a single to go along with the brand. Park also campaigned for Maxi-Peel with Kristine Hermosa . Following the revival of her career as a member of 2NE1 , Sandara endorsed high-profile local brands without the group. In 2009, she became the endorsement model for Oriental Brewery 's Cass beer series, one of Korea's most famous alcoholic beverages, alongside actor Lee Min-ho . To help promote the beer, an accompanying music video and song was released to nationwide attention. Etude House storefront in Myeong-dong , Seoul

Korea, stated that signing her would increase their products "attractiveness", and motivate buyers to purchase their items. After her campaign debuted, the company reported a massive increase in sales that put them only behind Samsung
Samsung
, the largest business conglomerate in South Korea, for the year of 2012. The company named the camera after her, going by the official name of "Sandara Digicam". Park is also well known for endorsing makeup brands. Despite having already worked with Etude House in 2010 alongside her group, the makeup brand sought to continue with her for an additional two years with the belief that her image would be a "good influence" to potential buyers. Over the course of her endorsement with Etude, the brand was able to compete with popular local makeup companies and were launched to international success. An umbrella called _Sweet Bunny_ was made available online and in stores to be given to buyers who paid for a certain amount of items. The limited special not only increased Etude House's sales, but also attracted a foreign consumer base who, moments after Park was seen holding the item, visited the South Korean stores specifically to purchase the umbrella, where it was bought in every color. In a week, Etude House sold over 40,000 of the umbrellas, ultimately selling out the product. A representative described the reactions of the public as "surprising". The makeup brand won several web awards for their achievements in marketing, services and makeup as well. In 2013, Sandara became the new makeup model for Clio, a well-established makeup company founded in 1993. Immediately after, sites recorded increased sales and her 'bloody series' makeup became a top-seller. The following year, the company's new mascara, Salon de Cara, was launched with Park as its model and sold out 130,000 units of its initial stock nationwide in only three weeks. The mascara went on to sell a record-breaking 300,000 units in the months following. A fansigning event was held on the 14 of November as a thank you to the buyers. Clio then closed the year with 4 awards, 3 of which were modeled by Park.

In 2015, Park joined the likes of supermodels Cara Delevingne , Sean O\'Pry , and fashion model/TV personality Kendall Jenner as Penshoppe 's ambassador. The following year, Park and G-Dragon was chosen as exclusive models for the cosmetic brand _Moonshot_ launched previously by YG Plus in 2014, a subsidiary company of YG Entertainment . Days after launching products released in their namesake, the product was sold out and required immediate restocking. A representative of _Moonshot_ noted that it was the first time their products left stores at such a high rate and that the overall reservations had gone up substantially. In June, Park became the new endorser for American shampoo brand Head width:5em;">Korea
