During that term, he presided over the Committee of Veterans Affairs, the first minority legislator appointed to chair a committee, a role previously reserved to majority party legislators. In the 2020 general elections, Dalmau Santiago was reelected as a senator. His fellow senators then elected him to be the 17th president of Puerto Rico's Senate. By 2024, Dalmau will have served for 24 consecutive years in the Senate.
