Broadgate
Broadgate is a large, office and retail estate in the Bishopsgate Without area of the City of London. It is owned by British Land and GIC and managed by Savills. The estate is in part of the eastern City fringe, outside the line of the now lost defensive walls, and east of the former Moorfields; a part of the city that is often described as part of the East End of London. The original developer was Rosehaugh: it was built by a Bovis / Tarmac Construction joint venture and was the largest office development in London until the arrival of Canary Wharf in the early 1990s. The original scheme was designed by Arup Associates, Team 2, which was headed by Peter Foggo, who later left Arup to set up his own practice Peter Foggo Associates, where he completed the initial phase of works. 5 Broadgate
5 Broadgate is a groundscraper in the City of London. It was designed by Ken Shuttleworth (architect), Ken Shuttleworth of Make Architects for Swiss bank UBS, the world's largest private bank. It is notable for the horizontal, diagonal and vertical strips of windows on its steel exterior. Design 5 Broadgate contains of office space over 13 storeys adjacent to Liverpool Street station. Its façade is made of stainless steel. The building is high at its corners, as tall as the other buildings on the Broadgate estate. Only about 35 per cent of the façade contains glazing for heat insulation. The exterior contains horizontal, diagonal and vertical strips of windows. Broadgate Tower
The Broadgate Tower is a skyscraper in London's main financial district, the City of London. It was constructed between 2005 and 2008. History The developer for the site was British Land. In February 2005 Broadgate Plaza Ltd, a subsidiary of British Land, submitted a planning application to the City of London for the construction of two buildings of 33 stories and 13 stories. Broadgate Tower, which was designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and built by Bovis Lend Lease, was completed in 2008. It was constructed at the same time as the neighbouring building, 201 Bishopsgate, and the two are separated by a covered pedestrian area. The building was used in the James Bond Skyfall movie to represent a Shanghai skyscraper. Liverpool Street Railway Station
Liverpool Street station, also known as London Liverpool Street, is a central London railway terminus and connected London Underground station in the north-eastern corner of the City of London, in the ward of Bishopsgate Without. It is the terminus of the West Anglia Main Line to Cambridge, the Great Eastern Main Line to Norwich, commuter trains serving east London and destinations in the East of England, and the Stansted Express service to Stansted Airport. The station opened in 1874, as a replacement for Bishopsgate station as the Great Eastern Railway's main London terminus. By 1895, it had the most platforms of any London terminal station. It served as the main terminus of the North London Railway (NLR) network, running from 1865 to 1986. Bishopsgate
Bishopsgate was one of the eastern gates in London's former defensive wall. The gate gave its name to the Bishopsgate Ward of the City of London. The ward is traditionally divided into ''Bishopsgate Within'', inside the line wall, and ''Bishopsgate Without'' beyond it. ''Bishopsgate Without'' is described as part of London's East End. The ancient boundaries of the City wards were reviewed in 1994 and 2013, so that the wards no longer correspond very closely to their historic extents. ''Bishopsgate Without'' gained a significant part of Shoreditch from the London Borough of Hackney, while nearly all of ''Bishopsgate Within'' was transferred to other wards. Peter Foggo
Peter Foggo (1930-1993) was a British architect, who headed the team at Arup Associates which designed the first phase of development at London's Broadgate in the 1980s. Foggo joined the Ove Arup Building Group in 1959, and became a partner in the new Arup Associates in 1963. Foggo designed the Horizon Building, a cigarette-making factory on a 45-acre site at the Lenton Industrial Estate in Nottingham for Player's , which opened in 1972, and won the Financial Times Architecture Award for 1973. It is now owned by Imperial Tobacco Imperial Brands plc (formerly Imperial Tobacco Group plc), is a British multinational tobacco company headquartered in Bristol, England. Ken Shuttleworth (architect)
Ken Shuttleworth (born September 1952 in Birmingham) is an English architect. Shuttleworth studied architecture at the Leicester School of Architecture, De Montfort University, where his fluid draftsmanship earned him the nickname "Ken the Pen". Shuttleworth became a partner at Foster and Partners where he worked on some of the world's most iconic buildings. He joined the practice in 1977, moving to Hong Kong in 1979 to oversee the design and construction of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation’s headquarters. Returning to the UK in 1986, he proceeded to build up a diverse portfolio of experience including the Carré d'Art in Nîmes, the ITN building in London, Cranfield University Library, Hong Kong’s Chek Lap Kok airport, the Al Faisaliah development in Riyadh, London’s Millennium Bridge, 30 St Mary Axe ('The Gherkin’) and City Hall.
