Kapler said that the key to turning Coonrod into an elite reliever is "getting in the zone and staying in the zone", rather than the quality of his pitches. After being traded to the Phillies, Coonrod saw an increase in his pitch control, which he attributed to the relatively higher humidity in Philadelphia and in the new spring training location of Clearwater, Florida. Personal life

Coonrod married his girlfriend Kara Kimball on November 24, 2017 in Fenton, Missouri. He continues to lift weights and practice pitching during the offseason by using the gymnasium at St. John's Elementary School in Carrollton.
