Stjernen played their first competitive match in December 1960 and entered the league system ahead of the 1961–62 season, starting out in the 3. divisjon (fourth tier). in 1981 and 1986. They reached the Finals again in 1987, and twice more during the 1990s. Since 2000, however, they have failed to qualify for the playoffs four times, and have only advanced to the Semi-finals on three occasions.

Correspondingly, the 1. divisjon (second tier) was renamed 2. divisjon, the 2. divisjon (third tier) was renamed 3. divisjon etc. *Mellomspillet was a one-time continuation league contested in 1984–85 between the six highest ranked teams in the 1. divisjon. Of these six teams, the top four qualified for the Semi-finals of the Norwegian Championship. *Before the 1990–91 season, the 1. divisjon was renamed Eliteserien.
