Lochs on islands
There are a very large number of lochs on the list of islands of Scotland, islands of Scotland, with the greatest density occurring in the Outer Hebrides. North Uist, North and South Uist

and Isle of Lewis, Lewis in particular have landscapes with a high percentage of freshwater and a maze and complexity of loch shapes. Harris, Outer Hebrides, Harris has fewer large bodies of water but innumerable small lochans.

Loch Orasaigh in Lewis is only about in extent but the island of Rainish Eilean Mòr is probably the largest island in Scotland relative to the size of the body of water it sits in, as it takes up about 20% of the loch's surface area.
The meanings of the names are generally derived from Scottish Gaelic language, Gaelic, Old Norse or Scots.

**Maybole, Lochspouts – a small loch near Maybole, Ayrshire, with a crannog. Converted into a reservoir and drained in 2003.
**Newfarm Loch – a large curling pond, drained in the 20th century.
**South Palmerston Loch (Ochiltree) – reduced to a small vegetated pond
