in 1951. He studied in Germany from 1953–55. He was awarded his D.Theol. in 1959. He was a professor of theology at the University of Oslo a position he held until 1988. He was dean of the Faculty of Theology and chairman of the Theology Seminar 1975–76. He was a prorector at the University of Oslo from 1977 to 1980. He served as chairman of the Norwegian Christian Student Movement 1958-65 and was a member of the central government in the Norwegian Bible Society 1966–75. Jervell was also a member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. In 2000, he was appointed a knight of the 1st grade of the
