On 10 June 2019, following a gas leak, an explosion devastated part of the municipality of Rocca di Papa and neighboring buildings: the explosion injured 16 people, including Crestini, who remained to evacuate the building. Transferred to the Sant'Eugenio Hospital in Rome with burns on 35% of the body, Crestini died on the evening of 20 June 2019, four days before he would have turned 47.
