History
Downtown station, then provisionally named Landmark, was first announced in June 2005 as part of the Downtown Extension (DTE) between
Millenia and
Chinatown

stations. Contract C907 for the construction of the station was awarded to Taisei Corporation for in December 2007. Originally a branch of the
Circle MRT line

, the Downtown Extension subsequently became the first stage of the
Downtown Line. The station's name was finalised as Downtown on 11 January 2011, adopting the namesake of its line. The station opened on 22 December 2013 together with the rest of Downtown Line Stage 1.
Station details
Downtown station is situated underneath Central Boulevard between the junctions of Straits View and Marina View. It is in the middle of Central Linear Park, where it faces The Promontory on one end and
Shenton Way station on the other. It is actually located closer to
Marina Bay than
Marina Bay station. The station uses a
side platform

Downtown station is connected via a network of underground passageways via
Marina Bay Link Mall to
