Club Sportivo Peñarol (Chimbas)

Club Sportivo Peñarol is a sports association primarily dedicated to football founded on 24 November 1918 and based in the town of Chimbas, near the city of San Juan, Argentina. The club has a rich history in the Liga Sanjuanina de fútbol. After playing the 2019 Torneo Regional Federal Amateur he was promoted to the Torneo Federal A for the first time in its history.

He is currently in the Torneo Regional Federal Amateur.

History

The club was founded on 24 November 1918 in the Plaza de la Concepción, located in the capital of San Juan. The club took its name from Peñarol of Uruguay and took the colors of Chacarita Juniors of Buenos Aires, the colors red, white, and black. But in the first order of t-shirts, from Buenos Aires they sent the clothing with the colors red, white and blue (instead of black) by mistake. They liked it the same and it was decided to stay that way. After passing through several fields in the capital, in the 1970s they moved to the Chimbas Department. He was champion of the Liga Sanjuanina de fútbol on 8 occasions, the last in 2017.

At the national level, he would not stand out until 1979, where he would qualify to compete in the 1979–80 Torneo Regional, where he would be quickly eliminated by the club Juventud Unida Universitario of San Luis after drawing the first leg 1–1 at home, but losing 2–0 as an away.

He would participate in the 2007, 2008, 2011, and 2012 editions of the Torneo del Interior (Argentine fifth division), without notable results.

He participated several seasons in the Argentine fourth division. He played the 5 editions of the Torneo Federal B (2014, 2015, 2016, complementary 2016 and 2017) plus the first of the 2019 Torneo Regional Federal, adding 6 consecutive seasons in the fourth division.

He participated in the 2019 Torneo Regional Federal Amateur, where he shared a group with Colón Junior, Sportivo del Bono, and Juventud Alianza; four wins, a draw and a fall left them in first place, being able to access the knockout phase, in which they defeated Defensores de la Boca without major problems by 3–1 on aggregate; Colón Junior with a 5–2 aggregate and Sporting Victoria de San Luis with a 5–0 aggregate. They played the final against San Martín, losing the first leg 1–0, but winning 3–0 in the second leg. As winner of the Cuyo region, he faced Independiente de Chivilcoy for a promotion to the Torneo Federal A. They won both matches 2–1 and were promoted to the third division for the first time in their history. On promotion day, 16 June 2019, in Chivilcoy, Sportivo Peñarol promoted with these players: Carlos Biasotti, Mario Rebeco, Lucas Arturia, Pablo Costi, Francisco Fernández, Roberto Martín, Ernesto Ceballos, Carlos Fernández, Facundo González, Gabriel González, and Gustavo Pereira. At 60 minutes Alan Cantero entered, who scored the two goals for the tricolor. Víctor Gil and Hernán Muñoz also entered.

The San Juan team played in Zone B of the 2019–20 Torneo Federal A, finishing in 14th position due to a bad campaign in the second round, remaining 5 points away from the relegation suffered by Deportivo Sol de Mayo. The Bohemian debuted in the 2019–20 Torneo Federal A on 31 August 2019 with a goalless draw against a regional rival, the Deportivo Maipú, at the Estadio Ramón Pablo Rojas. In the following match Sportivo Peñarol scores the first goal in its history in the third division, against Cipoletti. On 13 October 2019, the club achieved its first victory, against Olimpo de Bahía Blanca, 1–0, with a goal from Pablo Costi.

Despite the bad campaign in Torneo Federal A, the classification system for the 2019–20 Copa Argentina only used the first round of the tournament, so the team qualified for the regional preliminary phase. On 20 February 2020, they defeated Desamparados of San Juan 4–1 (5–1 overall) and qualified for the first time in its history to the 32nd round of the Copa Argentina, where it was defeated 2–0 against Newell's Old Boys.

In 2021, the team obtained its best result to date in the Torneo Federal A, remaining in 4th place in Zone 1, advancing to the reduced zone due to the second promotion with a campaign of 13 wins, 10 draws, and 7 losses (only 2 at home). In the round of 16 of the reduced team they fell to Defensores de Pronunciamiento by a score of 5–2, in a match that attracted the national press since in the run-up to the match a ball fence fell and some fans hung themselves from it, of which 2 had to be hospitalized. The decider campaign allowed him to qualify for the 2021–22 Copa Argentina, where they will face Colón de Santa Fe, recent Argentine football champion, in the round of 32, this being one of the most important games in the history of the San Juan team. The match played in Rafaela ended in a tight 2–1 defeat for Sportivo Peñarol, with Juan Pablo Varona being the goalscorer for this team.
