In 2008, MacLean announced his retirement from professional hockey and was named the assistant coach of the Stingrays soon after. He helped lead the Stingrays to the
Kelly Cup championship in
2009.
After head coach
Jared Bednar stepped down in 2009, MacLean was named the head coach of the team. He spent two seasons (
2009–10 and
2010–11) with the Stingrays as head coach before accepting an assistant coaching position with the
AHL's
Abbotsford Heat
