The tornado outbreak of September 24, 2001 was one of the worst tornado events to ever have directly affected the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area in the United States. The outbreak occurred on Monday, September 24, 2001, and was responsible for two deaths and 57 injuries. Meteorological synopsis On September 24, 2001, a trough in the mid- to upper-levels of the troposphere was tracking across the eastern U.S., accompanied by a cold front sweeping across the Appalachian Mountains. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) predicted that atmospheric instability ahead of the front would be sufficient to support the development of thunderstorms during the day. Fauquier is a county in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 72,972. The county seat is Warrenton. Fauquier County is in Northern Virginia and is a part of the Washington metropolitan area. The Fujita scale (F-Scale; ), or Fujita–Pearson scale (FPP scale), is a scale for rating tornado intensity, based primarily on the damage tornadoes inflict on human-built structures and vegetation. A tornado watch ( SAME code: TOA) is a severe weather watch product issued by national weather forecasting agencies when meteorological conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes. In addition to the potential for tornado development, thunderstorms that develop within the watch area may contain large hail, straight-line winds, intense rainfall and/or flooding that pose a similar damage risk as the attendant tornado threat.
