Skicross
Ski cross is a skiing competition which incorporates terrain features traditionally found in freestyle skiing with courses which include big-air jumps and high-banked turns. In spite of the fact that it is a timed racing event, it is often considered a type of freestyle skiing. What sets ski cross apart from other alpine skiing disciplines is that it involves more than one skier racing down the course. Any intentional contact with other competitors like grabbing or any other forms of contact meant to give the competitor an advantage leads to disqualification. Ski cross is a part of the FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships, the world championship organized by the FIS for freestyle skiing. International Ski Federation
The ''Fédération internationale de ski et de snowboard'' (FIS; en, International Ski and Snowboard Federation) is the highest international governing body for skiing and snowboarding. Founded on 2 February 1924 in Chamonix, France during the inaugural Winter Olympic Games, the FIS is responsible for the Olympic disciplines of Alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, ski jumping, Nordic combined, freestyle skiing, and snowboarding. The FIS is also responsible for setting the international competition rules. The organization has a membership of 132 national ski associations, and is based in Oberhofen am Thunersee, Switzerland. X Games
The X Games are an annual extreme sports event organized, produced and broadcast by ESPN. Coverage is also shown on ESPN's sister network, ABC. The inaugural X Games were held during the summer of 1995 in Providence and Newport, Rhode Island, United States. Participants compete to win bronze, silver, and gold medals, as well as prize money. Ashleigh McIvor
Ashleigh McIvor DeMerit (born September 15, 1983) is a Canadian retired freestyle skier currently residing in Whistler, British Columbia. McIvor was a member of the Canadian national ski cross team and became the first gold medal winner of women's ski cross at the 2010 Winter Olympics. She is also a former world champion in ski cross and has a second-place finish at the Winter X Games to her credit as well. Career McIvor entered skicross at a young age, and dominated the North American pro tour. As one of the youngest on the World Cup circuit, Ashleigh finished on the podium in her first World Cup race. Michael Schmid (skier)
Michael ("Mike") Schmid (born 18 March 1984) is a Swiss freestyle skier who specializes in the ski cross discipline. He is the inaugural Olympic champion in the event. He made his World Cup debut in January 2004 in Laax, and finished among the top thirty for the first time one year later, with a 22nd place in Pozza di Fassa. Then, two tenth places and a thirteenth place followed before the end of the season. He also finished sixth at the 2005 World Championships in Ruka. In the 2005–06 season he finished eighth three times, and took his first podium with a second place in Kreischberg in January. In the seasons 2006–07 and 2007–08 he finished consistently among the top ten in the World Cup, recording one more second place, and finished tenth at the 2007 World Championships in Madonna di Campiglio. Les Contamines-Montjoie () is a commune in the Haute-Savoie department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in south-eastern France. Etymology The original name of the village, ''Les Contamines,'' is from the word ''contamines'', which in the ancient local dialect meant ploughable land on the estate of the squire. The 2004/05 FIS Freestyle Skiing World Cup was the twenty sixth World Cup season in freestyle skiing organised by International Ski Federation. The season started on 4 September 2004 and ended on 11 March 2005. This season included three disciplines: aerials, moguls and ski cross. Halfpipe was also on schedule but all events were cancelled and so crystal globes were not awarded. There were no dual mogul events on world cup calendar this season. Sergey Ridzik
Sergey Sergeyevich Ridzik (russian: Сергей Серге́евич Ридзик, born 25 October 1992, Monchegorsk, Murmansk Oblast, Russia) is a Russian freestyle skier. Competing for Independent Olympic Athletes from Russia at the 2018 Winter Olympics, he won a bronze medal in the ski cross. He replicated this success at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. Career Ridzik was an alpine skier but, in 2011, switched to freestyle skiing. He did not qualify for the 2014 Winter Olympics, and after the Olympics was seriously injured and could not compete for several months. On 15 December 2017, he won a World Cup race in Montafon, his only World Cup win by the time of the Olympics. Marc Bischofberger (born 26 January 1991) is a Swiss freestyle skier competing in ski cross discipline. Brady Leman (born October 16, 1986) is a Canadian freestyle skier specializing in ski cross, and the reigning Olympic champion in that discipline following his victory in the ski cross event at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Career He won the opening event in the 2011–12 season after returning from multiple injuries and then finished the year as the second overall ranked male ski cross racer for the year. Fanny Smith (born 20 May 1992) is a Swiss freestyle skier. She represented Switzerland at the 2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022 Winter Olympics. Brittany Phelan (born September 24, 1991) is a Canadian freestyle skier who competes in ski cross. She was formerly an alpine skier, specializing in slalom skiing.
