Parakari
Parakari is a fermented alcoholic beverage made by Amerindians of Guyana. Like other cassava alcoholic beverages, parakari is made by dual fermenting cassava (a large starchy root), which involves the use of an amylolytic mold (Rhizopus sp., Mucoraceae, Zygomycota) by chewing it. Parakari is produced by Wapishana, Macushi, Patamona tribes, and production was observed among the Wai-wai, but is said to have ceased due to Christian missionary suppression. For the Makushi tribe, parakari making and drinking are an important part of group cohesion and cultural identity. In a study of the production process in a Wapisiana village, thirty steps were involved in parakari manufacture, including the use of specific cassava varieties, control of culture temperature and boosting of ''Rhizopus'' inoculum potential with purified starch additives. Zygomycota, or zygote fungi, is a former division or phylum of the kingdom Fungi. The members are now part of two phyla: the Mucoromycota and Zoopagomycota. Approximately 1060 species are known. The Wapishana or Wapichan (or Wapisiana, Wapitxana, Vapidiana, Wapixana) are an indigenous group found in the Roraima area of northern Brazil and southern Guyana. Macushi
The Macushi ( pt, Macuxi) are an indigenous people living in the borderlands of southern Guyana, northern Brazil in the state of Roraima, and in an eastern part of Venezuela. Identification The Macushi are also known as the Macusi, Macussi, Makushi, Makusi, Makuxi, Teueia, and Teweya people. Macushi, as well as the Arecuna, Kamarakoto, and Taurepan are considered sub-groups of Pemon. Language Macushi people speak the Macushi language, a Macushi-Kapon language, which is part of the Carib language family. Wai-wai People
The Wai-wai (also written Waiwai or Wai Wai) are a Carib-speaking Indigenous people of Guyana and northern Brazil. Their society consists of different lowland forest peoples who have maintained much of their cultural identity with the exception of Christianity which was introduced to them in the late 1950s. The Umana Yana in Georgetown, Guyana, takes its name from the Wai-Wai for "meeting place". Early contact The explorer, Sir Robert Schomburgk, may have been the first western to have contact with the Wai-Wai in December 1837. Nihamanchï is a beer brewed from manioc (''Manihot esculenta'') by indigenous peoples of South America. It is also known as nihamanci, nijimanche,Howell 49 or nijiamanchi, and is related to chicha.
