Hutchinsonite is a sulfosalt mineral of thallium, arsenic and lead with formula . Hutchinsonite is a rare hydrothermal mineral. It was first discovered in a sample from Binnental, Switzerland in 1903 and named after Cambridge mineralogist Arthur Hutchinson, F.R.S. (1866–1937) in 1904. Sulfosalt minerals are sulfide minerals with the general formula , where *A represents a metal such as copper, lead, silver, iron, and rarely mercury, zinc, vanadium *B usually represents semi-metal such as arsenic, antimony, bismuth, and rarely germanium, or metals like tin and rarely vanadium *X is sulfur or rarely selenium and/or tellurium. The Strunz classification includes the sulfosalts in a ''sulfides and sulfosalts'' superclass. A group which have similar appearing formulas are the sulfarsenides (for example cobaltite (Co,Fe)AsS). Thallium
Thallium is a chemical element with the symbol Tl and atomic number 81. It is a gray post-transition metal that is not found free in nature. When isolated, thallium resembles tin, but discolors when exposed to air. Arthur Hutchinson (mineralogist)
Arthur Hutchinson (6 July 1866 – 12 December 1937) was a British mineralogist. During World War I, and at the request of the Admiralty, he was asked to design gas masks suitable for the Navy; for his work, he was awarded the OBE. Hutchinson was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1922. He was master of Pembroke College, Cambridge, from 1928 to 1937, served on the Council of the Royal Society from 1932 to 1934, and was the Society's Vice-President for the year 1933-34. Life Hutchinson was born in London on 6 July 1866. His father was George Hutchinson of Woodside, Westmorland, and his mother was Deborah Richardson of Culgaith in Cumberland. He was educated at Clifton College and Christ's College, Cambridge, where he obtained first classes in both parts of the Natural Sciences Tripos, taking Part II in Chemistry with Mineralogy as a subsidiary subject in 1888. Lead Minerals
Lead is a chemical element with the symbol Pb (from the Latin ) and atomic number 82. It is a heavy metal that is denser than most common materials. Lead is soft and malleable, and also has a relatively low melting point. When freshly cut, lead is a shiny gray with a hint of blue. It tarnishes to a dull gray color when exposed to air. Lead has the highest atomic number of any stable element and three of its isotopes are endpoints of major nuclear decay chains of heavier elements. Binnental
The Binn Valley (German: ''Binntal'') is a valley of the Alps, located on the north side of the Lepontine Alps in the Swiss canton of Valais. The valley is drained by the ''Binna'', a tributary of the Rhone, at Grengiols. The valley is named after Binn (1,400 m), the main settlement. Other villages or localities are Ausserbinn (1,291 m), Heiligkreuz (1,458 m) and Fäld (1,547 m). The mountains in the Binntal generally exceed 3,000 metres. The highest are the Helsenhorn, the Turbhorn and the Ofenhorn. On the upper east side of the valley, the Albrun Pass connects it with the Italian Valle Devero.
