Handball At The 2004 Summer Olympics
Handball at the 2004 Summer Olympics included a men's and a women's team competitions with the preliminary rounds taking place in the Sports Pavilion at the Faliro Coastal Zone Olympic Complex. From the quarter final stage onwards, the women's event moved to the Helliniko Olympic Indoor Arena, a part of the Helliniko Olympic Complex, with the men joining them there for their semi-finals and final. The men's Handball event first made an appearance, played outside, at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany but did not then re-appear until the Games returned to Germany for the Munich Olympics in 1972 since when it has been ever present. The women's game debuted in Montreal, Quebec, Canada at the 1976 Summer Olympics and again has been ever present since. Sports Pavilion (Faliro)
The Faliro Sports Pavilion Arena which is part of the Faliro Coastal Zone Olympic Complex is an indoor arena in Palaio Faliro, in Athens, Greece. It is nicknamed "The Little Peace And Friendship Stadium", due to its similarity in design and close proximity to the Peace and Friendship Stadium. It was the site of the 2004 Athens Summer Olympics preliminary matches of handball, as well as the taekwondo competition. The arena seats 8,536 for handball matches of 2004 Olympics, though only 3,836 seats were made publicly available during the Olympics. History The arena was completed on December 20, 2003, and it officially opened on August 12, 2004, shortly before the 2004 Olympics began. Venio Losert
Venio Losert (born 25 July 1976) is a retired Croatian handball player who played as a goalkeeper. He is currently the goalkeeping coach of Egypt. Losert was born in Zavidovići, SR Bosnia and Herzegovina, grew up in Slavonski Brod, SR Croatia. Winning the first medal at the age of 19 at 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, when Croatia won the first gold medal as an independent nation, he is considered the youngest debutant of the team. Losert was also the member of the golden national handball team that won the first place at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. As a youngster he joined Badel Zagreb, the strongest team in the country and was part of the team who won the European Cup in 1992 and 1993. Henning Fritz (born 21 September 1974) is a German retired handball goalkeeper, current entrepreneur, book author and TV expert. In 2004, he was the first goalkeeper to be named World Player of the Year. Sports career At , Fritz is a relatively short goalkeeper who began playing major-league handball with SC Magdeburg. Frank Von Behren
Frank von Behren (born 28 September 1976 in Hille) is a retired German team handball player. Club career Von Behren played professionally for GWD Minden (1996–2003), VfL Gummersbach (2003–2006), SG Flensburg-Handewitt (2006–2008) and again Minden (2008). Markus Baur (born 22 January 1971) is a former German handball player now turned trainer. He is considered one of the world's best players on his position. Born in Meersburg, he is a member of the German national handball team since 1994, making his debut against the Moroccan national handball team on 4 August in Balingen. The German handball player of the years 2000 and 2002, he won the 2004 European Men's Handball Championship and the 2007 World Men's Handball Championship. Igor Vori (born 20 September 1980) is a Croatian retired handball player and current coach. He is currently working as the sports director of the Croatian national team. Vori competed for Croatia in the 2004, 2008 and the 2012 Summer Olympics. Club career Vori played in RK Zagreb and has also played for FC Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain. Goran Šprem
Goran Šprem (born 6 July 1979) is a Croatian former handball player. Šprem started his professional career with RK Zagreb in the late 1990s. He also spent a season with RK Medveščak Zagreb in 2001 and 2002, before returning to RK Zagreb for a second spell with the club between 2002 and 2004. He eventually left RK Zagreb for German side SG Flensburg-Handewitt in October 2004. He left Flensburg for a short spell with TuS Nettelstedt in February 2005, returning to the club in the summer of the same year and eventually spending a season with them. In the summer of 2006, he left Flensburg for a short spell with MT Melsungen, before joining his current club, HSG Nordhorn, in November 2006. He left Nordhorn in 2009.
