Flooding Water Ballast
A trailer sailer is a type of sailboat that has been designed to be easily transported using a boat trailer towed by an automobile. Trailer sailers include day sailers and small cabin cruisers, suitable for living on. Trailer sailers are used for both racing and recreation and are popular with small families and retirees. They occupy a space between smaller trailerable sailing dinghies which are intended for day use and larger boats which can only be removed from the water with specialised equipment such as boat lifting cranes. Unlike dinghies, many feature enclosed cabins which allow for overnight sleeping and dry storage. Most trailer sailers also feature ballast, either fixed or in a swinging centreboard or dagger board to make them easier to launch and retrieve. Hartley TS16
The Hartley TS16 (Trailer Sailer 16 foot) is an Australian trailerable sailboat that was designed in 1956 by New Zealander Richard Hartley as a day sailer and which later became a one design racer. The design was based on a traditional New Zealand mullet fishing boat and was the first trailer sailer sailboat design built. Hartley later designed the TS18 and TS21. Production Most boats completed have been built by amateur builders using hand tools in residential garages and constructed of wood. Construction time is estimated at 400 hours. Later, some were commercially manufactured of fibreglass over a foam core. The boat was actually designed to fit into a garage. Construction plans are supplied by Hartley Boat Plans of Australia. A cockpit is a name for the location of controls of a vessel; while traditionally an open well in the deck of a boat outside any deckhouse or cabin, in modern boats they may refer to an enclosed area. Smaller boats typically have an ''aft cockpit,'' towards the stern of the boat, whereas larger vessels may provide a ''center cockpit'' with greater protection from weather. On a recreational sailboat, the cockpit is considered the most safe external location for crew. A berth is a bed or sleeping accommodation on vehicles. Space accommodations have contributed to certain common design elements of berths. Beds in boats or ships While beds on large ships are little different from those on shore, the lack of space on smaller yachts means that bunks must be fit in wherever possible. Some of these berths have specific names: ;V-berth: Frequently yachts have a bed in the extreme forward end of the hull (usually in a separate cabin called the forepeak). Because of the shape of the hull this bed is basically triangular, though most also have a triangular notch cut out of the middle of the aft end, splitting it partially into two separate beds and making it more of a V shape, hence the name. Sandpipers are a large family, Scolopacidae, of waders. They include many species called sandpipers, as well as those called by names such as curlew and snipe. Sportsboat
The term sportsboat first appeared in the late 1980s and early 1990s to describe trailer sailers that were optimised for high performance at the expense of accommodation and ballast. The very definition of the term "sportsboat" is evolving. There is an absence of an accepted definition of the term. They tend to be characterised by historically large sail areas for a given length (especially under downwind sails), light weight construction and a heavy reliance on crew weight to counterbalance heeling forces. They usually feature lifting keels (for easy trailerability) of a modern fin and bulb design and planing hull designs. Most sportsboats are self-righting as opposed to skiffs. The Compass Careel 18 is an 18 ft long trailer sailer manufactured in Australia by David Rose Yachts. The Careel 18 was originally built in 1968 by John Duncanson as a Duncanson 18, with David Rose taking over manufacturing and renaming the boats the Careel 18.
