De Havilland
The de Havilland Aircraft Company Limited () was a British aviation manufacturer established in late 1920 by Geoffrey de Havilland at Stag Lane Aerodrome Edgware on the outskirts of north London. Operations were later moved to Hatfield in Hertfordshire. Known for its innovation, de Havilland was responsible for a number of important aircraft, including the Moth biplane which revolutionised aviation in the 1920s; the 1930s Fox Moth, a commercial light passenger aircraft; the wooden World War II Mosquito multirole aircraft; and the pioneering passenger jet airliner Comet. The de Havilland company became a member of the Hawker Siddeley group in 1960, but lost its separate identity in 1963. Later, Hawker Siddeley merged into what is eventually known today as BAE Systems, the British aerospace and defence business. Joan Fontaine
Joan de Beauvoir de Havilland (October 22, 1917 – December 15, 2013), known professionally as Joan Fontaine, was a British-American actress who is best known for her starring roles in Hollywood films during the "Golden Age". Fontaine appeared in more than 45 films in a career that spanned five decades. She was the younger sister of actress Olivia de Havilland. Their rivalry was well-documented in the media at the height of Fontaine's career. She began her film career in 1935, signing a contract with RKO Pictures. Fontaine received her first major role in ''The Man Who Found Himself'' (1937) and in '' Gunga Din'' (1939). William Lee de Havilland (born 8 November 1994) is an English professional footballer who plays for Maidenhead United, as a defender. De Havilland began his career with Millwall, never making a first-team appearance, and spending loan spells with non-league clubs Cambridge City and Histon. After leaving Millwall in 2014 he had a brief spell, also in non-league, with Bishop's Stortford, before returning to league football with Sheffield Wednesday. He left the club after two years, having not made a first-team appearance, and signed for Wycombe Wanderers where he made his professional debut. He spent loan spells at non-league Aldershot Town and Maidstone United. In June 2018 it was announced that he would sign a permanent contract with Maidstone United in July 2018. Walter Augustus de Havilland (31 August 1872 – 20 May 1968) was an English patent attorney who became professor of Law at Waseda University and was one of the first Westerners to play the game of Go at a high level. He was the father of film stars Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontaine. Early life and career De Havilland was born in Lewisham, south London on 31 August 1872, the youngest of eight children. He was the fourth son of the Reverend Charles Richard de Havilland (1823-1901), of a landed gentry family of Guernsey origin, and second wife Margaret Letitia (1831-1910), daughter of Captain John Molesworth, R.N. and sister of the 8th Viscount Molesworth. Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas Fiott de Havilland (April 1775 – 23 February 1866) was a British Army officer and engineer in the Madras Presidency. He later served as a justice and member of the legislature of Guernsey. De Havilland was born in April 1775 at Havilland Hall, Guernsey, the son of Sir Peter de Havilland, Bailiff of Guernsey from 1810 to 1821, and his wife Cartaretta, daughter and heir of the Rev. Sir Peter de Havilland (27 October 1747–April 1821) was a lawyer and member of the de Havilland family of Guernsey. He served as Bailiff of Guernsey from 1810 to 1821. Family and early life De Havilland was born at Saint Peter Port, Guernsey, in 1747, the thirteenth child of John de Havilland (1706-1770), who was elected a jurat in 1729, and Mary, daughter of Peter Dobrée. The Dobrées were a wealthy Guernsey family, but Peter Dobrée had moved to London for business and it was there, at Clapham, that John de Havilland married Mary Dobrée in 1728. John and Mary lived in a now-demolished house called La Bataille. Eight of their thirteen survived to adulthood: Catherine, Mary, John, James, Martha, Eliza, Martin and Peter. John De Havilland (pilot)
John de Havilland (17 October 1918 – 23 August 1943) was a British test pilot. John and his brothers, Geoffrey de Havilland Jr. and Peter, were sons of Geoffrey de Havilland, the famous designer and manufacturer. All three brothers were pilots and flew as test pilots for the de Havilland company. John had been a sergeant in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (RAFVR) prior to the Second World War. Due to the demands for pilots in the de Havilland company, he was released from service and joined his father's firm. During a test flight of a de Havilland Mosquito Mark VI, flying with flight test observer John H. F. Scrope, he Mid-air collision, collided in the vicinity of St Albans with another Mosquito Mark VI flown by pilot George Gibbins. Hereward De Havilland
Hereward de Havilland (2 December 1894 in Nuneaton, Warwickshire – 12 September 1976 in Australia) was a pioneer British aviator, test pilot and member of the de Havilland company. One of the three sons of Rev. Charles de Havilland, he was the younger brother of Geoffrey de Havilland. Actresses Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontaine were his cousins. He had a son Peter Adam de Havilland (m. Barabara Bolt) and grandchildren John and Joanna de Havilland. The de Havilland Engine Company was an offshoot of the de Havilland aircraft building company, which started life as the 'Engine Division of the de Havilland Aircraft Company' in 1926 producing the famous de Havilland Gipsy aero-engine. The company was merged with Bristol Siddeley (BSEL) engines in 1961 with BSEL subsequently becoming part of Rolls-Royce Limited in 1968.
