Cercanías
The commuter rail systems of Spain's major metropolitan areas are called ''Cercanías'' () in most of Spain, ''Rodalia'' () in the Valencian Community, ''Aldiriak'' () in the Basque Country and ''Rodalies'' () in Catalonia. There are twelve ''Cercanías'' systems in and around the cities of Asturias, Bilbao, Cádiz, Catalonia, Madrid, Málaga, Murcia/Alicante, Santander, San Sebastián, Seville, Valencia and Zaragoza. They are linked to Metro systems in Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao and Valencia. The Cercanías division of Renfe was created in 1989 on the advice of engineer and transit planner Javier Bustinduy ( es; 1949–2016), as part of a major effort to massively increase ridership, frequencies and hence attractiveness of commuter rail systems in Spain. Cercanías Madrid is the commuter rail service that serves Madrid, the capital of Spain, and its metropolitan area. Cercanias Sevilla is a commuter rail system operating in and around the Seville metropolitan area. Currently, it contains 5 separate lines, 251 kilometres of railway and 37 stations. ''Cercanías Cádiz'' is the commuter rail service in the cities of Cádiz and Jerez de la Frontera in Andalucia, Spain. The service consists of two lines of 14 stations over 61 km of track, serving 2.8 million passengers a year. History Suburban trains began service in Cádiz in the 1980s. In 2000, work began to place the railway line leading into Cádiz underground to enable double-tracking and create a new linear park in the city. During this work, Cádiz railway station was temporarily closed with Cortadura serving as a terminus in the meantime. Cercanías Bilbao (Basque: ''Bilboko Aldiriak'') is a commuter rail network in Bilbao, serving the city and its metropolitan area. It is operated by Cercanías, as part of Renfe, the national railway company. It consists of three lines, named C-1, C-2 and C-3. All three of them start at Bilbao-Abando station, which is the central station of the city. Cercanías Valencia ( ca-valencia, Rodalia de València) is the commuter rail service that serves Valencia, Spain, and its metropolitan area. Cercanías Málaga
Cercanías Málaga is a commuter rail service between central Málaga, Spain, and towns in the province. The network consists of of track, with two lines and 24 stations in operation. The trains are powered by overhead lines and run on broad Iberian gauge track. History In 1908 the first line of the Ferrocarriles Suburbanos de Málaga opened; a metre-gauge rail network connecting Málaga to Vélez-Málaga. This line was later extended to Ventas de Zafarraya, along with lines to Coín and Fuengirola. The lines closed in stages between 1960 and 1968.
