The choral concerto (Russian language, Russian: , ', Ukrainian language, Ukraininan: , ', occasionally known as "vocal concerto" or "church concerto") is a genre of sacred music which arose in the Russian Empire in the middle of the seventeenth century and remained popular into the early nineteenth century. Choral concertos are short compositions for a cappella, unaccompanied voices, typically containing multiple and distinct sections, with occasional solo (music), soloistic interludes. The text of the compositions was usually selected from the psalms and other Bible, biblical texts, with occasional settings from feast day Proper (liturgy)#East, sequences. Polyphony ( ) is a type of musical texture consisting of two or more simultaneous lines of independent melody, as opposed to a musical texture with just one voice, monophony, or a texture with one dominant melodic voice accompanied by chords, homophony.
