Assassination Of Fernando Villavicencio
On 9 August 2023, eleven days before the 2023 Ecuadorian general election, presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio was assassinated after leaving a campaign rally in Quito, the capital of Ecuador. One assailant was killed during the attack. Several bystanders, including security personnel and a legislative candidate, were injured. Ecuadorian Security Crisis
Since around 2018, Ecuador has suffered a security crisis resulting from conflicts between criminal organizations with connections to drug trafficking. In recent years, coca leaf production has risen in neighboring Colombia and Peru, with both cocaine and coca base entering Ecuador by land and leaving by sea. Agustín Aníbal Intriago Quijano (20 January 1985 – 23 July 2023) was an Ecuadorian lawyer and politician. He served as mayor of Manta, Ecuador until his assassination. Early life Agustín Aníbal Intriago Quijano was born in the city of Manta, Manabí. He graduated as a lawyer from the Laica Eloy Alfaro University of Manabí and later obtained masters degrees in International Trade and Finance from the same university and in Public Management from the International University of La Rioja. In Ecuadorian politics, (; , ) is the name commonly given to a mechanism governing the impeachment of the president of Ecuador and the dissolution of the National Assembly provided for in Articles 130 and 148 of the 2008 Constitution. Article 148 grants the president the power to dissolve the National Assembly, but only at the price of giving the electorate the opportunity to vote the president out of office. The mechanism requires that a special election be held following dissolution, in which a new president and vice-president and a new National Assembly are elected. The candidates elected – to both the executive and legislative branches – then serve out the remainder of the current presidential and legislative terms.
