Kandula (elephant)
Kandula is a famous war elephant mentioned in the Sinhala chronicle Mahavamsa. According to the chronicle, when Dutugamunu of Sri Lanka (101–77 BC) was born, many items of value were said to have appeared spontaneously, which were found and brought in by various people as gifts to the newborn. Among them a fine elephant who was found by a fisherman named ''Kandula''. The elephant was named for its finder and became the companion of Dutugamunu, serving as his mount during the wars that led to the unification of Sri Lanka. The climactic duel between the Indian king Ellalan and Dutugemunu is said to have occurred near Anuradhapura where the two kings mounted on elephants; Dutugemunu mounting Kandula and Elara mounting Maha Pambata. Kandula Mallikarjuna Rao
Kandula Mallikharjuna Rao, better known as Mallik (1921–1996) was an Indian popular music composer and singer. He was born to K. Venkatachalam and Lakshmi Narasamma. He was born in Machilipatnam, Krishna District, Andhra Pradesh. He received initial training in music from late Krovi Satyanarayana. He worked as a music composer and singer at All India Radio, Madras for 30 years. He later transferred to All India Radio, Vijayawada. While working at Akashvani, he composed for many songs, dance dramas, Bhakthi Ranjani songs and folk songs. He was the first composer of many reputed Tallapaka Annamacharya Keerthanas. Examples of such include ''Adigo Alladigo'', ''Thandhanana Aahi'', and ''Narayanathae Namo Namo''. He also composed the famous Raja Rajeshwari Astakam, Hanuman Manjari. On May 22, 2023, a U-Haul truck crashed into the north barriers of Lafayette Square in Washington, D.C., unfurling a Nazi flag after the crash.
