The circuit intendant of Shanghai or the daotai of Shanghai, also formerly romanized as taotai or tao tai, was an imperial Chinese official who oversaw the circuit of Shanghai, then part of Jiangsu Province, in the Qing Empire. He oversaw the area's courts, law enforcement, civic defense, canals, and customs collection. As well as areas within modern Shanghai, his remit also included Qidong in present-day Jiangsu. The position was only compensated at the () but, in addition to other sources of income, it was seen as a springboard to higher office within the empire. History The original seat of the circuit was at Taicang. It was moved to Shanghai in the 18th century. The first foreign settlement in Shanghai, the British Concession, was established by the Land Regulations () undertaken on the initiative of the intendant Gong Mujiu. Zhu Lin (; born November 7, 1933) is a retired Chinese politician and economist, and the widow of former Chinese Premier Li Peng. Biography Zhu was born in Shanghai, on November 7, 1933. Her father Zhu Jixun () was a businessman. She elementary studied at and secondary studied at Bashu Secondary School. After graduating from Heilongjiang University, she was dispatched to the Jilin Chemical Plant as an interpreter. Later she served as head of the Foreign Affairs Office of North China Electric Power Bureau, director of the Beijing Office of Guangdong Daya Bay Nuclear Power Plant, and director of the Research Office of the Special Administrative Region Office of the State Council. Li Peng (; 20 October 1928 – 22 July 2019) was a Chinese politician who served as the fourth Premier of the People's Republic of China from 1987 to 1998, and as the Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, China's top legislative body, from 1998 to 2003. For much of the 1990s Li was ranked second in the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) hierarchy behind then Party General Secretary Jiang Zemin. Zhu Lin (; born 1949), born as Wang Zuling (), is a Chinese novelist. Life Zhu Lin was the only child of parents who divorced when she was a baby. She did not have an easy childhood: she was brought up by her father, an academic, and a grandmother. Graduating from high school in 1968, she was rusticated to Fenyang County in Anhui Province, where she lived in primitive rural conditions. Blocked by her class background from attending university, she managed to return to Shanghai in 1975, working in a street factory before getting a job as an editor.
