The Zêzere () is a river in Portugal, tributary to the Tagus. It rises in the Serra da Estrela, near the '' Torre'', the highest point of continental Portugal. The Zêzere runs through the town Manteigas, runs through Belmonte, passes south of the city of Covilhã and east of the town of Pedrogão Grande. Torre (English: ''Tower'') is the highest point of mainland Portugal, and the second-highest in the country overall (only Mount Pico, in the Azores, is higher). This point is not a distinctive mountain summit, but rather the highest point in a plateau. Torre has an unusual feature of being a summit that is accessible by paved road, the Regional Road 339 (R 339), formerly National Road 339 (N 339). It is located in a mountain range named Serra da Estrela, on the border between the municipalities of Seia, District of Guarda and Covilhã, District of Castelo Branco. Ramsar Convention
The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance Especially as Waterfowl Habitat is an international treaty for the conservation and sustainable use of Ramsar sites (wetlands). It is also known as the Convention on Wetlands. It is named after the city of Ramsar in Iran, where the convention was signed in 1971. Bouçã Dam ( pt, Barragem da Bouçã, links=no) is a concrete double curvature arch dam on the Zêzere River, where the river forms the border line between the districts of Castelo Branco and Leiria. It is located in the municipality Pedrógão Grande, in Leiria District, Portugal. The dam was completed in 1955. It is owned by ''Companhia Portuguesa de Produção de Electricidade'' (CPPE). Dam Bouçã Dam is a 63 m tall (height above foundation) and 175 m long double curvature arch dam with a crest altitude of 181 m. The volume of the dam is 70,000 m³. The dam features an uncontrolled spillway over the dam (maximum discharge 2,200 m³/s) and one bottom outlet (maximum discharge 200 m³/s). Mondego River
The Rio Mondego () or Mondego River is the longest river entirely within Portuguese territory. It has its source in Serra da Estrela, the highest mountain range in mainland Portugal (i.e. excluding the Portuguese islands). It runs from the Gouveia municipality, at above sea level in Serra da Estrela, to its mouth in the Atlantic Ocean next to the city of Figueira da Foz. Etymology The river's name is believed to be derived from the pre-Roman, Hispano-Celtic word ''Munda'' or ''Monda'' — by which names it had been referred to in the classical antiquity by Pliny and Ptolemy —, later latinised into ''Mondæcus'' until evolving into the present name.
