Zwochau
Zwochau is a village and a former municipality in the district (''Landkreis'') of Nordsachsen, North Saxony, in the administrative region (''Direktionsbezirk'') of Leipzig, in Saxony. Since 1 January 2013, it is part of the municipality Wiedemar. Location The village lies approximately 30 km east of Halle (Saale), ca. 20 km northwest of Leipzig, and 10 km southwest of Delitzsch. The national autobahn no. 9 runs west of the corporate boundary and can be accessed via the Wiedemar entrance ramp (ca. 4 km). The community is marked with the vestiges of the defunct middle German Lignite, Brown coal industry. Lakes are currently forming in the vast open pits of the former mines (the Werbeliner See, ''Grabschützer See,'' and ''Zwochauer See'') as a part of the new "Saxon Sealand." Nordsachsen ("North Saxony") is a district ('' Kreis'') in Saxony, Germany. History The district was established by merging the former districts of Delitzsch and Torgau-Oschatz as part of the district reform of August 2008. Delitzsch
Delitzsch (; Slavic: ''delč'' or ''delcz'' for hill) is a town in Saxony in Germany, 20 km north of Leipzig and 30 km east of Halle (Saale). With 24,850 inhabitants at the end of 2015, it is the largest town in the district of Nordsachsen. Archaeological evidence outside the town limits points to a settlement dating from the Neolithic Age. The first documented mention of Delitzsch dates from 1166 and it later became the Elector of Saxony's residence in the 17th and 18th centuries. Lignite
Lignite, often referred to as brown coal, is a soft, brown, combustible, sedimentary rock formed from naturally compressed peat. It has a carbon content around 25–35%, and is considered the lowest rank of coal due to its relatively low heat content. When removed from the ground, it contains a very high amount of moisture which partially explains its low carbon content. Lignite is mined all around the world and is used almost exclusively as a fuel for steam-electric power generation. The combustion of lignite produces less heat for the amount of carbon dioxide and sulfur released than other ranks of coal.
