Zuidwolde, Drenthe
Zuidwolde is a village in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is located in the municipality of De Wolden, about 7 km southwest of Hoogeveen. The village was integrated with Ruinen since 2008 Zuidwolde was a separate municipality until 1998, when it became part of De Wolden. Zuidwolde also is the site of the De Vlijt a windmill from the 1800s. Hoogeveen
Hoogeveen (; nds-nl, 't Ogeveine or '' 't Oveine'') is a municipality and a town in the Dutch province of Drenthe. Population centres Elim, Fluitenberg, Hoogeveen and Noordscheschut, which still have the canals which used to be throughout the town. Other villages of the town are Hollandscheveld, Nieuw Moscou, Nieuweroord, Nieuwlande, Pesse, Stuifzand and Tiendeveen. History Hoogeveen dates its history to 20 December 1625, when Roelof van Echten bought a large tract of peat land from farmers of the district with the plan to harvest its peat. One old map of the area called it ''Locus Deserta Atque ob Multos Paludes Invia'', a deserted and impenetrable place of many swamps. Hoogeveen itself was established in 1636 by Peter Joostens Warmont and Johan van der Meer. Jan Vayne
Jan Vayne (pseudonym of Jan Veenje) (June 9, 1966 in Zuidwolde, Drenthe) is a Dutch pianist. He began piano lessons at the age of 4 years and by the time he was 10, he had won his first prize. In 1984 Vayne began his study at the conservatorium in Zwolle and he graduated with a soloist diploma. He received much acclaim after several appearances on Dutch television talk shows. He has made several CDs and has given many concerts. In 1997 he was invited to perform a concert in the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington DC to honour President William Clinton's second-term inauguration. Vayne has in the past worked with DJ and producer Armin van Buuren. Together they made the album Classical Trancelations that is a mixture of trance and classical music. Jan Vayne regularly gives concerts in collaboration with symphony orchestras, ensembles, musicians, vocalists, harmony orchestras and choirs. Ruinen
Ruinen is a village in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is located in the municipality of De Wolden, about 10 km northwest of Hoogeveen. The Dwingelderveld National Park is located near Ruinen. History The village was first mentioned in 1139 as de Runa. The etymology is unknown. Ruinen is an ''esdorp'' from the Early Middle Ages. Around 1140, a double monastery of the Benedictines was founded in Ruinen, however they moved to De Wijk in 1325. The Dutch Reformed has been built in the 15th century replacing and reusing the monastery church of which dated from around 1140. The tower was built in 1423. The spire has been renewed in 1660 after it had been damaged by a storm, and the crown was replaced in 1952. Between 1972 and 1975, the church was restored to its original form before 1836. ''De Vlijt'' (English: ''The Diligence''), formerly known as ''Hoop van Zegen'' is a smock mill in Zuidwolde, Drenthe, which has been conserved. The mill was built in 1878 and is listed as a Rijksmonument, number 41099. History The first windmill on this site was a post mill that was built in 1731. It burnt down in 1877. To replace it, the drainage mill ''Zuidplasmolen I'' was moved to Zoudwolde. It had stood between Moordrecht and Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel, South Holland.
