Hoogeveen
Hoogeveen (; nds-nl, 't Ogeveine or '' 't Oveine'') is a municipality and a town in the Dutch province of Drenthe. Population centres Elim, Fluitenberg, Hoogeveen and Noordscheschut, which still have the canals which used to be throughout the town. Other villages of the town are Hollandscheveld, Nieuw Moscou, Nieuweroord, Nieuwlande, Pesse, Stuifzand and Tiendeveen. History Hoogeveen dates its history to 20 December 1625, when Roelof van Echten bought a large tract of peat land from farmers of the district with the plan to harvest its peat. One old map of the area called it ''Locus Deserta Atque ob Multos Paludes Invia'', a deserted and impenetrable place of many swamps. Hoogeveen itself was established in 1636 by Peter Joostens Warmont and Johan van der Meer. Its coat of arms, granted 10 November 1819, is white, with a pile of peat covered in straw in the center and beehives on each side, representing the town's first two major industries. Nieuwlande
Nieuwlande (Dutch Low Saxon: ''Neilaande'') is a Dutch village located in the north-eastern province of Drenthe situated in the municipality of Hoogeveen. The population, as of 2018 is 965. Nieuwlande is one of only two villages in the world that collectively received Righteous Among the Nations award for its Holocaust Rescue story where nearly all of the towns residents hid and saved the lives of hundreds of Jews as well as resistance fighters and German deserters during World War II. Nieuwlande is on peat land in the south of Drenthe. It arose where five municipalities meet: Oosterhesselen (by far the largest part), Dalen, Coevorden, Hardenberg, and Hoogeveen. For this reason a book about Nieuwlande's history of the village had the catching title "Nieuwlande, village with five burgomasters". Drenthe
Drenthe () is a province of the Netherlands located in the northeastern part of the country. It is bordered by Overijssel to the south, Friesland to the west, Groningen to the north, and the German state of Lower Saxony to the east. As of November 2019, Drenthe had a population of 493,449 and a total area of . Drenthe has been populated for 15,000 years. Overview Pesse is an ''esdorp'' which developed in the Middle Ages. It was first mentioned in 1217 as Petthe. The etymology is unclear. Elim, Drenthe
Elim is a village in Drenthe (province of The Netherlands) and is part of the Hoogeveen municipality. History Before 1786, there were only swamps in this part of the Netherlands. After the drainage of the swamps, people started to harvest peat, which was transported to the west of the Netherlands. The people who harvested the peat built houses on the land and started a small community, on the present place of Elim, called "Het Dwarsgat". In 1915, the village became known as Elim. Hollandscheveld
Hollandscheveld () is a village in the municipality of Hoogeveen, the Netherlands. It was founded in the 17th century after the Hollandsche Compagnie (''Company from Holland'') bought the land to harvest its peat. It was initially named Hollandsche Veld (''Field of the Hollandsche Compagnie'') which was later combined into just Hollandscheveld. During the Second World War, three notorious war criminals lived in Hollandscheveld: Auke Pattist, Dirk Hoogendam and Martinus Johannes van Oort. These men tortured arrested resistance warriors and Jews in a local school. Dirk Hoogendam was sentenced to death after the war, but managed to escape to Germany where he died in 2003. Known resistance heroes Marinus and Johannes Post were born in Hollandscheveld. They were both executed by the Germans in 1944.
