Zottegem
Zottegem (, Sotteghem and Sottegem in older English and French language sources) is a municipality located in Belgium and more particularly in Flanders, in the province of East Flanders. The municipality comprises the town of Zottegem proper and the villages of Elene, Erwetegem, Godveerdegem, Grotenberge, Leeuwergem, Oombergen, Sint-Goriks-Oudenhove, Sint-Maria-Oudenhove, Strijpen and Velzeke-Ruddershove. On 1 January 2018, Zottegem had a total population of 26,373. The total area is 56.66 km2 which gives a population density of 470 inhabitants per km2. Zottegem is part of the hilly geographical area of the Flemish Ardennes (''Vlaamse Ardennen''); the hills and cobblestone streets (Paddestraat) are regular locations in the springtime cycle classics of Flanders. Velzeke-Ruddershove
Velzeke-Ruddershove is a double village in the Denderstreek in the province of East Flanders in Belgium, currently part of the municipality of Zottegem. The two villages of Velzeke and Ruddershove were merged in 1825. The settlement of Velzeke dates back from at least the Roman era, when it was a vicus situated at a crossroads in the network of Roman roads in Gallia Belgica. The municipality merged into Zottegem in 1970. History The village of Velzeke was first mentioned in 1015 as Felsecum; Ruddershove was first mention in 1053 as Rotgeri Curtis. The villages were part of the Land of Zottegem. In 1825, the villages which had grown together where merged in a single municipality. In 1970, the municipality was merged in Zottegem. Erwetegem
Erwetegem is a village and ''deelgemeente'' (sub-municipality) belonging to the municipality of Zottegem. It is located in the Denderstreek and in the Flemish Ardennes, the hilly southern part of the province of East Flanders, Belgium. Erwetegem used to be an independent municipality until 1970. History The village was first mentioned in 1116 as Herwetengem. Saint Peter's Abbey, Ghent, Saint Peter's Abbey in Ghent and the used to have many possessions in Erwetegem. Erwetegem used to be an independent ''heerlijkheid'' until the 13th century when it became part of the ''heerlijkheid'' of Zottegem. The St Pieters Banden Church was first mentioned in 1162. Grotenberge
Grotenberge is a village belonging to the municipality of Zottegem. It is located on the Molenbeek (Erpe-Mere Bovenschelde), Molenbeek and the Molenbeek-Ter Erpenbeek within the Denderstreek and the Flemish Ardennes, the hilly southern part of the East Flanders province, Belgium. Grotenberge is known for the Domain of Breivelde, a 19th-century large garden, turned into a romantic style park with an arboretum. The park also hosts a castle. Construction started in 1830, the current state dates from around 1879. In 1970, the domain was bought by the city of Zottegem, and has received a protected state in 1982. Leeuwergem is a village belonging to the municipality of Zottegem. It is located on the Molenbeek, in the Denderstreek and Flemish Ardennes, which is part of the hilly southern part of the East Flanders province, Belgium. Lamoral, Count of Egmont, Prince of Gavere (18 November 1522 – 5 June 1568) was a general and statesman in the Spanish Netherlands just before the start of the Eighty Years' War, whose execution helped spark the national uprising that eventually led to the independence of the Netherlands. Biography The Count of Egmont was at the head of one of the wealthiest and most powerful families in the Low Countries. Paddestraat
The Paddestraat (English: ''Toad Street'') is a 2.3 km long cobbled road in the municipality of Zottegem, in East Flanders, Belgium. The road is a regular location of the springtime cycling classics in Flanders. In 1995, the cobbled road of the Paddestraat was classified as a protected monument by the Flemish government. Characteristics The road is situated entirely in Zottegem. The cobbled part starts at the bridge over the Zwalm, a small river at 18 m altitude, on the border between Zwalm and Zottegem. It runs northeasterly towards the ''Roman Square'' in Velzeke, a part of Zottegem, at 50 m altitude. Most altitude gain happens in the first 800 m, before flattening out in the latter 1.500 m, totalling ca. 2.350 m of cobbled surface. Godveerdegem is a village belonging to the municipality of Zottegem. Flemish Ardennes
The Flemish Ardennes (Dutch: ''Vlaamse Ardennen'') is an informal name given to a hilly region in the south of the province of East Flanders, Belgium. Highest summit is the Hotondberg (145 m). Main characteristics of the region are rural hilly landscapes with hilltop bluebell woodlands (Muziekbos, Brakelbos, Kluisbos), windmills and watermills. The area is distinct and not adjacent to the larger Ardennes, which is further to the south east of the country in Wallonia, France, Germany and Luxembourg. Among the largest towns in the area are Oudenaarde, Ronse, Zottegem and Geraardsbergen. Cycling is particularly popular in the Flemish Ardennes. Many major bike races are held here, including a large part of the Tour of Flanders.
