Zottegem (, Sotteghem and Sottegem in older English and French language sources) is a municipality located in Belgium and more particularly in Flanders, in the province of East Flanders. The municipality comprises the town of Zottegem proper and the villages of Elene, Erwetegem, Godveerdegem, Grotenberge, Leeuwergem, Oombergen, Sint-Goriks-Oudenhove, Sint-Maria-Oudenhove, Strijpen and Velzeke-Ruddershove. On 1 January 2018, Zottegem had a total population of 26,373. The total area is 56.66 km2 which gives a population density of 470 inhabitants per km2. Tim Matthys (born 23 December 1983) is a Belgium, Belgian Association football, football official and a former player. As of 2019, he works as a scout with K.A.A. Gent, Gent. Career While playing for his club (Zulte Waregem), the Forward (association football), striker scored 5 goals in the UEFA Cup in only 3 matches. Matthys scored one in the first round against FC Lokomotiv Moscow and scored a hat-trick against Austria Wien. He is the best scorer of his team in this competition. He also scored in the Belgian Cup final, which allowed S.V. Zulte-Waregem entry into the UEFA Cup. Matthys previously played for Panthrakikos F.C., Panthrakikos in the Greek Super League. Lamoral, Count of Egmont, Prince of Gavere (18 November 1522 – 5 June 1568) was a general and statesman in the Spanish Netherlands just before the start of the Eighty Years' War, whose execution helped spark the national uprising that eventually led to the independence of the Netherlands. Biography The Count of Egmont was at the head of one of the wealthiest and most powerful families in the Low Countries. Paternally, a branch of the Egmonts ruled the sovereign duchy of Guelders until 1538. Lamoral was born in La Hamaide near Ellezelles. Kasteel Van Leeuwergem
Leeuwergem Castle ( nl, Kasteel van Leeuwergem) is a stately home in the village of Elene in the municipality of Zottegem, East Flanders, Belgium. History The present building was constructed between 1762 and 1764, on the site of an earlier castle of the first half of the 15th century. It was built for the Ghent nobleman Pieter Emmanuel d’Hane (1726-1786), probably by Jean Baptist Simoens of Ghent (1715-1779). The interior and exterior is in the French château style, as the estate was built after examples in France. Today the castle is private property of the house of della Faille d'Huysse. Gardens The castle is known for its fine baroque gardens and hunting forest estate. The gardens were designed between 1763 and 1775. The gardens can be visited on request. Paddestraat
The Paddestraat (English: ''Toad Street'') is a 2.3 km long cobbled road in the municipality of Zottegem, in East Flanders, Belgium. The road is a regular location of the springtime cycling classics in Flanders. In 1995, the cobbled road of the Paddestraat was classified as a protected monument by the Flemish government. Characteristics The road is situated entirely in Zottegem. The cobbled part starts at the bridge over the Zwalm, a small river at 18 m altitude, on the border between Zwalm and Zottegem. It runs northeasterly towards the ''Roman Square'' in Velzeke, a part of Zottegem, at 50 m altitude. Most altitude gain happens in the first 800 m, before flattening out in the latter 1.500 m, totalling ca. 2.350 m of cobbled surface. The road dates back to Roman times, when it was a part of the historic road from Boulogne-sur-Mer to Cologne.
