A Zirkel (German for "circle", as in "circle of friends") is a monogram used in European student societies in countries such as Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Hungary, Latvia, Estonia (Studentenverbindungen). __TOC__ Look and meaning A ''Zirkel'' consists of intertwined lines, followed by an exclamation mark if the society is still active. The lines mostly show the first letters of the name of the ''Studentenverbindung'' and / or the letters v,c,f or e,f,v. USS Zirkel (ID-3407)
USS ''Zirkel'' (ID-3407) was a cargo ship that served in the United States Navy from 1918 to 1919. SS ''Zirkel'' was a Design 1015 ship built in 1918 at Oakland, California, for the United States Shipping Board by the Moore Shipbuilding Company. The U.S. Navy acquired her on 27 September 1918 for World War I service with the Naval Overseas Transportation Service, assigned her Identification Number (Id. No.) 3407, and commissioned her the same day as USS ''Zirkel'' (Id. No. 3407) at San Francisco, California. ''Zirkel'' got underway for the Gulf of Mexico with a cargo of nitrates. Steaming via the Panama Canal, she arrived at New Orleans, Louisiana, on 30 January 1919 and unloaded her cargo. Following repairs to her turbines, ''Zirkel'' filled her holds with cotton, coffee, and steel and put to sea on 6 February 1919. Mount Zirkel
Mount Zirkel is the highest summit of the Park Range of the Rocky Mountains of North America. The prominent peak is located in the Mount Zirkel Wilderness of Routt National Forest, north-northeast ( bearing 19°) of the City of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, United States, on the Continental Divide between Jackson and Routt counties. Ferdinand Zirkel
Prof Ferdinand Zirkel Royal Society of London, FRS(For) HFRSE (20 May 183811 June 1912) was a German geologist and petrography, petrographer. Biography Zirkel was born in Bonn. Educated in his native town, he graduated PhD from the University of Bonn in 1861. His training and initial interest was in mining. In 1860 he traveled to Iceland with William Thierry Preyer, and in 1862 they published ''Reise nach Island im Sommer 1860''. After graduation, Zirkel was engaged in teaching geology and mineralogy in Vienna at the Geological Institution. His journey to Iceland, along with travels to the Faeroe Islands, Scotland and England, and a meeting with Henry Clifton Sorby, led him from mining to the study of microscopical petrography, then a comparatively new science. He became professor of geology in 1863 in the University of Lemberg, in 1868 at the University of Kiel, and in 1870 was made professor of mineralogy and geology in the University of Leipzig.
