Zhang River
The Zhang River is a tributary of the Wei River in China. The river commences at the confluence of the rivers Qingzhang (or Clear Zhang, 清漳河) and Zhuozhang (or Turbid Zhang, 浊漳河), where between She county of Hebei and Linzhou of Henan, then joins the Wei River in Guantao county, Hebei. A dam on the Zhang River diverts water into the Red Flag Canal. History A bend in the Zhang was fortified in antiquity as the Zhao stronghold of Handan. Henan
Henan (; or ; ; alternatively Honan) is a landlocked province of China, in the central part of the country. Henan is often referred to as Zhongyuan or Zhongzhou (), which literally means "central plain" or "midland", although the name is also applied to the entirety of China proper. Guantao County () is a county of southern Hebei province, China, bordering Shandong's Guan County and Linqing to the east across the Wei Canal (). It is under the administration of Handan City, and has a population of 320,000 residing in an area of . Chen Xi (rebel)
Chen Xi (died 194BC) was a Chinese rebel against the first Han emperor Liu Bang (posthumously the "Emperor Gaozu" or "High Ancestor"). Life Chen Xi came from Yuanqu, a former city in what is now Longwangmiao Village in the Mudan District of Heze, Shandong. His early life and circumstances are not recorded,. but Liu Bang came to place great trust in him and his abilities. The Chu general Xiang Yu defeated Zhang Han at Julu (within present-day Pingxiang County, Xingtai, Hebei) in 207BC, effectively ending the Qin Empire. Chen joined Liu with 500 conscripts the next year, pledging his loyalty at the beginning of the internecine wars that became known as the Chu–Han Contention. Chen held Bashang ( ''Bàshàng'') near present-day Xi'an and was named Liu's " Guerrilla General" ( t s ''Yóují Jiāngjūn''). Liu Bang
Emperor Gaozu of Han (256 – 1 June 195 BC), born Liu Bang () with courtesy name Ji (季), was the founder and first emperor of the Han dynasty, reigning in 202–195 BC. His temple name was "Taizu" while his posthumous name was Emperor Gao, or Gaodi; "Gaozu of Han", derived from the ''Records of the Grand Historian'', is the common way of referring to this sovereign even though he was not accorded the temple name "Gaozu", which literally means "High Founder". Handan
Handan is a prefecture-level city located in the southwest of Hebei province, China. The southernmost prefecture-level city of the province, it borders Xingtai on the north, and the provinces of Shanxi on the west, Henan on the south and Shandong on the east. Zhao () was one of the seven major State (Ancient China), states during the Warring States period of ancient China. It was created from the three-way Partition of Jin, together with Han (state), Han and Wei (state), Wei, in the 5th century BC. Red Flag Canal
The Red Flag Canal () is an irrigation canal located northwest of Anyang in the northern extremity of Henan, China. Geographic location The canal begins close to the border of Henan and Shanxi. It diverts water from the Zhang River (). The Zhang River flows from Shanxi and becomes the border between Hebei and Henan near to Handan. The dam is located near the corner of the three provinces. The canal winds around the side of a cliff, through 42 tunnels and along the side of the Taihang Mountains. The main canal is long with many branches to distribute the water. Hebei or , (; alternately Hopeh) is a northern province of China. Hebei is China's sixth most populous province, with over 75 million people. Shijiazhuang is the capital city. She County (), or Shexian, is a county of southwestern Hebei Province, China, located on the lower reaches of the Zhang River and bordering Shanxi to the west and Henan to the south. Wei River (Shandong)
The Wei River (, p ''Wèi Hé'', also spelled as Wey River) of Shandong Province and Henan Province is a long tributary of the Hai River.
