Zemessardze
The Latvian National Guard or NG ( lv, Latvijas Republikas Zemessardze, ZS) is a part of the Latvian National Armed Forces. The National Guard is a basic land component, consisting of volunteers who perform traditional national guard duties such as crisis response and support for military operations. It consists of the Staff Headquarters and 4 brigades (formally - regions or novadi), which are divided into 18 battalions. The National Guard continued its development also after Latvia joined NATO. History The National Guard was established on August 23, 1991 by the Supreme Council of the Republic of Latvia as a voluntary public military self-defense organization. Egils Leščinskis
Brigadier General Egils Leščinskis (born July 18, 1967) is an active duty Latvian officer who has been serving as the Commanding General of the Latvian National Guard since May 2019. Early life Leščinskis was born in 1967 in what was then the Latvian SSR. In 1992 he graduated from Riga Technical University. Military career As part of the regaining of national independence in Latvia, Egils Leščinskis joined the Latvian armed forces as they were being rebuilt in 1991/92 following the collapse of the Soviet Union. He gained experience in international military service at the NATO headquarters in Belgium and as a lecturer at the Baltic Defence College. Mārupe
Mārupe (german: Marienbach) is a town in and the centre of Mārupe Municipality, Latvia. Mārupe is in practice a suburb of the Latvian capital, Riga, and is the headquarters of the Latvian Bandy Federation. A small river Mārupīte flows through the town. Ulbroka is a village in Stopiņi Parish, Ropaži Municipality in the Vidzeme region of Latvia. It is the administrative center of Stopiņi Parishand municipality.
