Zainal Abidin (actor)
Zainal Abidin (31 August 1928 – 7 January 2000) was a Citra Award-winning Indonesian actor who played in more than a hundred and fifty films. Biography Abidin was born in Batavia, Dutch East Indies (now Jakarta, Indonesia) on 31 August 1928. He completed his education through senior high school before beginning work at a shipping company based at Tanjung Priok in 1950. He left the position in 1952, and the following year made his feature film debut, taking a minor role in Chaidar Djafar's ''Sedarah Sedaging''. In his first two years as an actor, Abidin took a further ten roles. He remained highly active until 1964. when he was arrested for his relationship with the Communist Party of Indonesia ( or PKI) following a failed coup attempt on 30 September 1965 which the army blamed on the PKI. Batavia, Dutch East Indies
Batavia was the capital of the Dutch East Indies. The area corresponds to present-day Jakarta, Indonesia. Batavia can refer to the city proper or its suburbs and hinterland, the Ommelanden, which included the much-larger area of the Residency of Batavia in the present-day Indonesian provinces of Jakarta, Banten and West Java. The founding of Batavia by the Dutch in 1619, on the site of the ruins of Jayakarta, led to the establishment of a Dutch colony; Batavia became the center of the Dutch East India Company's trading network in Asia. Teguh Karya
Teguh Karya (born Steve Liem Tjoan Hok; ; 22 September 1937 – 11 December 2001) was an Indonesian film director. Starting his entertainment career in theatre, he made his directorial debut with '' Wadjah Seorang Laki-Laki'', released three years later. He later directed numerous critically acclaimed films, including '' Cinta Pertama'', '' Badai Pasti Berlalu'', and ''November 1828''. In 2001 Karya died from complications from a 1998 stroke. Biography Teguh Karya was born Steve Liem Tjoan Hok on 22 September 1937 in Pandeglang, Banten. He was the first child of Chinese Indonesians Laksana Karya (Tjon Hok) and Naomi Yahya; there was some Bantenese descent from his grandmother. Wim Umboh
Ahmad Salim (26 March 1933 – 24 January 1996), better known by his birth name Wim Umboh but also known by the Chinese name Liem Yan Yung, was an Indonesian director who is best known for his melodramatic romances. Born in North Sulawesi, Umboh was orphaned at the age of eight and later adopted by a Chinese-Indonesian doctor. After high school, he moved to Jakarta and found work at Golden Arrow Studios as a janitor and, later, translator. In 1955 he made his screen debut as a director with ' (''Behind the Walls''). During his career, which spanned more than forty years, Umboh directed close to fifty movies, which garnered 29 Citra Awards from the Indonesian Film Festival. He was diagnosed with liver cancer in 1978 but, after recovering, he continued to work until his death from complications of diabetes and a stroke. Umboh was married three times and had two children.
