Yorke Highway
Yorke Highway is the main road from Adelaide to the southern parts of the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia. It runs from the northeast to the southwest of the peninsula. It branches off Copper Coast Highway after rounding the top of Gulf St Vincent, runs down the coast to Ardrossan then inland through Maitland to the Spencer Gulf coast at Hardwicke Bay then through Warooka to the south coast at Marion Bay and Stenhouse Bay on Investigator Strait. The state government proposes to restructure the intersection at the north end of the Yorke Highway to provide a large roundabout instead of it being the terminating road at a tee-junction. The roundabout will permit road trains to operate between Port Wakefield and Ardrossan which had previously not been permitted due to limitations of that intersection. Port Giles, South Australia
Port Giles is a port on Yorke Peninsula in the Australian state of South Australia located in the gazetted locality of Coobowie between the towns of Stansbury and Edithburgh. Port Giles a port facility consisting of a large jetty equipped for bulk handling of grain which is operated by Flinders Ports, and a similarly large grain storage facility operated by Viterra. It was opened by the then Premier of South Australia, Steele Hall in 1970, and led to the closure of many of the smaller ports on the peninsula. Port Giles can handle Panamax size ships or larger. Port Giles was purposely built to be able to handle bulk grain, and load it onto larger modern ships. Many of the other ports were not deep enough for larger ships, and could only be serviced by small ketches and coastal steamships. They only handled grain in bags, not in bulk. Port Wakefield, South Australia
Port Wakefield (formerly Port Henry) is a town at the mouth of the River Wakefield, at the head of the Gulf St Vincent in South Australia. It was the first government town to be established north of the state capital, Adelaide. Port Wakefield is situated from the Adelaide city centre on the Port Wakefield Highway section of the A1 National Highway. Port Wakefield is a major stop on the Adelaide – Yorke Peninsula and Adelaide – Port Augusta road routes. Road Train
A road train, land train or long combination vehicle (LCV) is a trucking vehicle used to move road freight more efficiently than semi-trailer trucks. It consists of two or more trailers or semi-trailers hauled by a prime mover. History Early road trains consisted of traction engines pulling multiple wagons. The first identified road trains operated into South Australia's Flinders Ranges from the Port Augusta area in the mid-19th century. They displaced bullock teams for the carriage of minerals to port and were, in turn, superseded by railways. During the Crimean War, a traction engine was used to pull multiple open trucks.
